Sir Arthur Evans was born on July 8, 1851 in Hertfordshire, England. He was the oldest son of Sir John Evans, an archaeologist who catalyzed his son’s passion for archaeology. Before becoming an archaeologist himself, Sir Arthur Evans was a curator. As an archaeologist, he uncovered evidence of a civilization he called the Minoan civilization (named after King Minos). Due to his strong interest in Crete after Heinrich Schliemann’s discovery of Troy, he suggested the idea that the pre-classical Mycenaean civilization of Greece started in Crete.
