Ever since I can remember fashion has always been a great interest for me. So much that this plain and boring scenario made me think of how art plays into our everyday lives and attire. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Andy Warhol have influenced our world’s architecture, clothes, technology, and modern art. Without some of these greatest artists we would be living in white simple attire and driving a white box car. The Italian Renaissance is a great time period that marks of how art greatly influenced European culture and society. Along with other forms of liberal art developments, Renaissance art was known to be elaborate. Today we still see the influence of Renaissance art by its decorative lines in furniture and architecture,

People often look at Elizabethan‘s choice of fashion and ridicule everything about it from the hair, down to the stockings. As it appears, fashion has always been a broad topic of discussion in the world. Whether it is NY Fashion Week or a Macy’s fashion show, fashion is something that has always been an eye catcher. Fashion has been around for many years, and whether we know it or not, Elizabethan fashion has influenced the way modern fashion is today.
To begin with, I will look at each of the two subjects. Fashion is an extremely large subject with many sub-categories and can mean many different things, however in this essay I will take fashion to mean the popular clothing style. I will put emphasis on looking at high fashion as these are the leaders of their field. Fashion itself though, is not to be confused with clothing. Clothing is a part of fashion, but it is predominantly purely functional, for protection from different aspects of the environment. Fashion however, is primarily for image. It is a way to present individuality and personality. A physical mouldable form of expression. Designers wish to create works of art that can be worn, and this is wear clothing becomes an art form.
From the early 1400s to the early 1500s, Europe underwent a drastic shift from ancient culture and affairs, into modernity, and adopted more progressive beliefs. This time widely became known as the “Renaissance.” An increasing interest with ancient Greek and Roman culture became key aspects during this time. Coincidentally, this occurred right around the time when scholars began to focus in on knowledge and education. These progressive viewpoints opened the gateway for influence from foreign countries. At this time, many non-European countries saw this as an opportunity to ally with the powerful European countries, so China seized its opportunity. In Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries clothing was not a mere necessity; it was a fashion statement from which people could determine whether you were a common figure or a figure of nobility. Prior to Spain’s domination of fashion innovation, the Burgundians set the trends in clothing. Spain’s courts held the political powers that were most dominant and therefore their fashions were the most sought after. Even during the domination of Spain as the fashion capital, however, France was widely respected for its production of luxury goods. Especially during the reign of Francois I in the mid-16th century, France was admired for its elegance.

If we look at the past, art has always been heavily influenced by the social and political reasons. Searching through history, we find that while social views of a certain period may no longer be relevant, the art and design of that time often are.
Many people would not believe that there are so many similarities between modern day fashion and the fashion of the renaissance time period. Many differences may be seen between the two, but the similarities are remarkable. Throughout all of time, clothing has been the major representation of social classes. What people wear has always been the distinguishing factor between the wealthy and the poor classes of both the renaissance and current time period. The evolution from time period to time period has been vast, but the fact that what people wear represents what class they reside in is still very prevalent. From the fabrics, jewels, and accessories, you can still see many similarities from the renaissance time period to the current time period. “…much of what we know about historical dress comes from the apparel of the elite.” (Sauro) Although much time has progressed, fashion from the renaissance period has held a strong influence on the fashion in today’s society.

Looking at the broad historical perspective, people have been considering clothing as an elemental demand that cannot be replaced in human life. Clothes have become a typical topic for not only researchers but also students. That was the reason why I had a trip to a museum of Te Manawa and saw many exhibits there about wearable arts. At the first sight I stepped into the arts area, I started to wonder what the artists created these costumes for. I stopped by an exhibit, called “The Reflection On Time”, which impressed me the most. Wearing a hooded jacket with a jean, I was almost overwhelmed with its magnificence. It was such a pellucid collection of plastics that you can see through and observe every line of the model statue. It brought me a feeling of standing in front of an elegant lady. I had never seen such a pure beauty before. Being a faithful fan of Lady Gaga, I found those unique costumes were very interesting. I then did a research on things called “wearable arts”. Surprisingly, it turned out wearable arts has become a popular term recently. Actually, it is quite difficult to define what wearable arts really are. Basically, wearable art consists of innovative combinations of things which are able to express emotions of the artists or causes emotional reactions in the audience and can be worn in certain circumstances.
