Egyptian Religion Effects Culture Religion played one of the biggest roles in shaping the way that Egyptians lived their daily life and the affect it had on their culture. The polytheistic religion the Egyptians believed in ordered their lives and was said to help them maintain balance in their lives. Polytheism is the belief of more than one God. Ancient Egypt's culture and daily life was primarily based on religion and the Pharaohs success as a ruler. Religion is defined by how a person or group of individuals thinks they should live out their daily lives. Some people believed the pyramids were built by aliens cause of their massive structures but they were actually built by Egyptians. The pyramids were tombs to protect the dead from wild animals. The Pharaohs of early Egypt were buried in the pyramids and . The three largest pyramids were the pyramids at Giza. These pyramids were also the most fascinating because it had some of the most fascinating engineering work. The great pyramid at Giza was the burial site of the Pharaoh Khufu and guarding this pyramid was the Great Sphinx. The Great Sphinx is a human head said to be Khufu's with a lions body. The Sphinx is said to have hidden passage ways underneath but none have yet to be found. Some people of ancient Egypt believed that the sphinx had hidden magical powers to protect the Pharaoh Khufu. Besides pyramids, temples were also built to show the wealth of the rulers during the New Kingdom. Their were two types of temples known as the cult and funerary temples. The cult temples had images of Gods and the funerary temple were the burial sites of the kings. Temples weren't just burial sites but they were "powerhouses" that represented the wealth of the Pharaoh. Ramses the second built many temples and statues and some of them are still standing

Religion was a major part of Ancient Egyptians’ lives. Their faith was so engrained in them that it was more of a lifestyle than a set of beliefs. The Egyptians practiced polytheism, or the worship of many gods, and they believed that their pharaoh was a god on Earth (Doc 3). The people worshipped the pharaoh and gave him all respect and power. They believed that their two main goals in life were to keep the pharaoh and the other gods happy and to live a good life so that they may enjoy a happy life after death. Their shared faith strengthened their society because everyone was working toward the same goal. Groups were not divided based on what god they worshipped. Instead, the fact that every person lived to please the same gods and wished to go to the same afterlife gave them something in common and brought them together as a community. Sumerians also practiced polytheism and believed that their priests were connected to the gods. The people thought it was their responsibility to keep the gods happy, and believed that if the gods were pleased, they would allow their people to be content as well (Doc 6). Because of their desire to please the gods, Sumerians performed every task to the best of their ability. For example, they invested lots of time and money into their ziggurats, or temples, because they only wanted to give their best to the gods.
