Tanks During World War One Tanks have been around for a long time, dating way back to world war one. Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to come up with the idea of building tanks, way back in the fifteenth century. The British were the first one’s to produce the tanks on September 6, 1915. The British first developed the tanks in hopes of helping them with the trench warfare in world war one. Tanks were armed vehicles with conveyor-belt-like tracks over the wheels that were able to break through enemy lines, and go through strenuous territory.
