Hitler’s personal drive to expand Germany’s borders across Europe while putting dominance on what he determined to be ‘inferior people’ was the main contributing cause of World War II. In my opinion, All four parts of MAIN were very involved in contributing to the cause of World War II. Hitler used military might to conquer and divide Poland with the Soviet Union. This caused Western allied retaliation towards Germany. He also used military power and intimidation to accomplish his goal of Germany’s expansion. Hitler allied Germany with Italy and Japan by the sharing in the common goal of conquering other nations. Hitler’s imperialist drive continued further in the breaking of his alliance with Stalin. This resulted in sending German forces to conquer the Soviet Union to capture more land for Germany. With Germany, Italy, and Japan, Hitler created an intimidating alliance of imperialist powers that called for an immediate unity of western nations ready for military retaliation. German Imperialism on Europe is the main reason for allied retaliation. Hitler’s nationalist ideas were used as reasons by him to stretch out his land. Out of each part of MAIN, militarism is proven to be the most important contributing cause.

In 1919, Japan had a great amount power at the Versailles Peace Conference. Also, the Peace Treaty confirmed the transfer to Japan of Germany’s rights allowing Japan to obtain territories in Shandong. This resulted in the increase in Nationalism for the Japanese. Towards the end of the period, they had prepared themselves to establish a dominant reign. This reign is over much of Pacific Asia and ready to wage a conquering war against mainland Asia. Japan led a ruthless assault in the Pacific for fifteen years. This small island was able to spread imperialism and terror to neighboring countries through means of force and brutality. Japan even attempted to combat and overcome European and Western countries such as Russia and the United States. Even with an extreme militaristic government, Japan was unable to achieve the glory it was promised and hoped for. The Pacific War analyzes Japan’s part in the war and what the country could have done to prevent such a tragedy.
In the words of John Green, “The truth resists simplicity”. Assigning the blame of WWII to the Treaty of Versailles is far too simple of an explanation. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI while sanctioning and punishing Germany, forced Germany to pay reparations. These reparations are said to have caused economic challenges in Germany, which allowed Hitler to take control on nationalist fervor. Thus, the story goes, that the Treaty of Versailles made Hitler’s rise to power, and his starting of WWII, inevitable. However, this mode of explanation is a deeply flawed oversimplification. The Treaty of Versailles did not make WWII inevitable because the independent forces of the Great Depression and Japanese expansion also played key roles, and because nationalism was most likely to arise in Germany even if there were less harsh terms to the treaty.
Hitler's Aims and Actions as the Cause of World War II When considering the reasons for the outbreak of war in 1939 it is easy to place the entire blame on Hitler’s aggressive foreign policy in the late 1930s. One British historian, writing a few years after the end of the war, claimed that ‘the Second World War was Hitler’s personal war, in that he intended it, he prepared for it, he chose the moment for launching it.’ In this assignment it is my intention to show that Hitler’s foreign policy was a major factor in causing the conflict but that other reasons, both long term and short term, need to be recognised as well. Probably the first factor that need considering is the Treaty of Versailles, of 1919.
World War Two was the most devastating conflict in the history of humanity. It crippled many nations and caused millions of people to die. One of the major causes of this disastrous war was the Treaty of Versailles which ended the First World War. This treaty was destructive towards the Germans. Germany had to pay large amounts of reparations to the Allied nations at the end of World War One resulting in a Great Depression in Germany. Additionally, the Treaty of Versailles’ war guilt clause forced Germans to admit full responsibility for starting the war. Furthermore, to gain the support of the German populace, Adolf Hitler adopted an effective propaganda campaign. Adolf Hitler employed a successful propaganda campaign to gain the support of the German people combined with the Treaty of Versailles harsh economic and political sanctions ignited World War Two.

World War II was not only started by Adolf Hitler and Germany, but had a lot to do with the humiliation that Germany felt when the terms of the Treaty of Versailles were laid down. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles may be indirectly related to the cause of World War II, but nonetheless was a huge factor in starting the war.

Hitler was weakening his own strength, whilst he was strengthening that of his opponent by declaring war on another great power, the United States. The declaration of war on the US proved very costly. Hitler’s alliance with Italy was also a burden to Germany as they were too dependable on Germany and became more of a liability than an asset. Plus after the overthrow of the Italian Government, the new Italian government joined the allies, which opened up a new front and threat of attack. Hitler continually underestimated the strength of his opponents and overestimated the strength of his own army. Diverting his troops to different fronts too often and weakening the German force. Hitler’s pursuit of the Final solution, which drained the army of manpower and resources, and his failure to recognise the need for total war before it was too late and Germany was already facing defeat, can also be attributed to bad leadership and judgement by the Fuhrer which would eventually lead to the downfall of the Third Reich. Therefore the leadership and decisions of Hitler make him responsible for Germany’s defeat in World War Two.
The Nazi empire was one of the most brutal regimes in history and was ruled with an iron fist (Third Reich: An Overview). All of the Nazi empire was controlled by an evil man named Adolf Hitler. Most of the soldiers were loyal and obedient to Hitler; carrying out atrocities, including the murder of millions of mainly Jewish people. Even though most were loyal, some of the officers stood up to Hitler’s reign (The History Place - Defeat of Hitler: Running out of Time). The few that had stood up to Hitler were some of the German generals in the Wehrmacht who had enough of Hitler; and had plotted and tried to carry out the assassination of him.

He was able to rise within the minds of the German people, allowing him to reach absolute power. And with this power, he pointed a gun back at the Allies, not knowing that they had one more bullet than he.

Hitler had a lot to do with Germany.’ Hitler started volunteering for the German army.’ This supports one way on how he rose up to power and did everything he did. In addition, “ As leader of the Nazi party he orchestrated the holocaust, which resulted in the death of four million Jews.’’ (BCC programmes) This shows Hitler was the one who was blamed and planned everything out.
One main way the Treaty of Versailles caused WWII is the territorial losses Germany suffered. According to “German Territorial Losses, Versailles Treaty, 1919,” Germany lost a lot of land from the treaty. Some of the land the Germans lost was rich in coal, and when lost, the German’ coal production was reduced by 40%. As a result, Germany wanted its pre-war land back. As Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf says, “the restoration of the frontiers of 1914 could only be achieved by blood…” which foreshadows a war, with intent to get back lost land. Furthermore, the Germans were furious, which also foreshadows a war. All of the aforesaid evidence points to the Treaty of Versailles being responsible for WWII.
Lastly and most significantly European Tensions with the ever-growing Germany, which caused them to become nervous that Germany would expand and take over larger and more powerful nations in Europe. This led to another cause of the war because people would not have been happy if Hitler stole parts of other countries where German people lived. He demanded living space, 'Lebensraum', for his people in the East. People did not like the idea of this as to use more space you need more land, which means he would need to take land from other countries, making Germany a lot stronger. In 1933 Hitler began to build up Germany's army which violated one of the rules set by the Treaty of Versailles.
