In 1933, Germany was a democracy. This was also the same year that Hitler rose to power in Germany. A series of events occurred that allowed Hitler to gain the power to become a dictator, yet it was genuinely the popularity and attention he gained from the people that allowed him to eventually become a dictator. This essay will look at how popularity as a leader can lead to a change in the form of government, specifically auditing the case study of Hitler from 1933 to 1939 when Germany was changed from a democracy to a dictatorship. Due to Hitler’s popularity, he became a popular leader and was given the power to rule the country of Germany relentlessly.
First, it should be considered how Hitler rose to power in Germany. Many factors played into Hitler becoming the Chancellor of the state of Germany. When the Reichstag (Parliament) building burned down in 1933, President Hindenburg, who was afraid of communism, feared that communists were taking over. Hitler was granted emergency powers at this time. As well, Hitler had Nazi storm troopers guard the election building and deny entrance to those who might not vote for Hitler. Although Hitler was taking actions to win the election, plenty of people did not know the lucrative approach that he was taking to win it. If Hitler had not worked for five years to get Germany out of a rough, dark, and dreary time from 1929 through the Great Depression, would the public have fallen for his plan; his plan to play nice until he was in such a position of authority that no one could stop his madness. The answer is probably not. Hitler meticulously planned out every move he made and nothing he did was impulsive. One wrong move and everything he had worked for could have vanished, but never did it
