Gothic art had changed dramatically over the next few years, but first I’m gonna start with what Gothic Art is. Gothic Art is a type of structure that was used for building some of the biggest cathedrals built from the 12th-16th century. It was also used in churches and was founded in Europe in the medieval times. Gothic Art was admired for the stained-glass windows that were being held by unique arches the soared forward in support like a spiral. It was also known for its unique carvings of the Bible on all surfaces in the cathedrals/churches. It was popular in more than just great cathedrals. Eventually the style began to be sold in styles for painting , small castles, and arts and crafts. The style was made as a solution to have a support strong …show more content…

Gothic Art however was evolved from the earlier the days. Over time it had learned to adapt to the new style of their time , and changed the original image of gothic. It started to lose its key elements and became more of a sort of genre rather than a specific style with its main architectural points. In gothic art the colors were vibrant , the stained-glass windows were tiny shards of glistening pieces of classes that came together perfectly to show the image of something from the Bible. Not only did these stain-glasses images look beautiful and brighten the cathedrals with their massive sizes, they also helped people who didn’t know how to read. These cathedrals were built with towering spires, pointed arches and flying buttresses giving impressions of harmony and luminosity. One of the major accomplishments of the 12th and 13th centuries was to develop the engineering mastery of the ribbed vault, pointed arch and flying buttress to create a great cathedral that is at once taller, lighter, wider, and more elegant than the ones before. Even though the pointed arch could support more weight than its predecessors, there was still the problem of finding a way to support the heavy masonry ceiling vaults over wide spans. In order to support the outward thrust of barrel vaults, vertical support walls have to be very thick and heavy. What makes possible the extensive use of ribbed vaulting and pointed arches to “open” and “lighten” the walls and space of the cathedral is the flying buttress—“an arched bridge above the aisle roof that extends from the upper nave wall, where the lateral thrust of the main vault is greatest, down to a solid pier.”
