N. Scott Momaday tells the journey of Abel in his novel House Made of Dawn. The novel introduces Abel, the main protagonist, who is running alone at the break of dawn, but the reasons for which Abel’s running is unknown and unexplained until the end of the book. Francisco, Abel’s grandfather who raises him, comes to pick up Abel returning from war and is greeted by a drunken Abel. Abel doesn’t have any family member left aside from his Francisco. Abel’s father wasn’t around, his mother died, and his brother Vidal also died. Abel is a complicated character because Abel is an alcoholic and leaves him to continuously get into troubles. The way that Abel grew up also affected the way his life was going to become later. Many themes and symbols are use throughout the book to help the reader know that something significant will be happening in Abel’s life. This paper will discuss different themes that link events and its effect in telling Abel’s story.
Running was a theme that is uses that effect in telling Abel’s story. The beginning of the story introduces Abel running. Abel is running the same race that Francisco described in his memory. When Francisco went to pick up Abel in the beginning of the story, Francisco passes by Seytokwa which reminds him the race for good hunting and harvests. Francisco describes the race in the same way in comparison to Abel’s race. Francisco was running to the point of which his body no longer feels as if it was in pain. The highlight and importance of the race was when Francisco overtaken Mariano, who was supposed to be the fast runner, and smack him with his hand. Mariano was the best and Francisco beat him; therefore, Francisco is able to put his problems with Mariano behind him. When ...

In order to help the reader do so, the book provides many themes and symbols that explain how different themes link events and how it effects the telling of Abel’s story. Abel spoke few words in the novel because he feels that words are powerful. Abel finally understands the traditions of his grandfather running the race and can let go of the things prevent him to go beyond his past. Abel grew up without a father figure and senses the nature around him at age five during his mother’s death; therefore, he appreciate the nature and life during his childhood and does not want to assimilate into the modern world. Although the themes discuss in this paper described the effect of Abel’s story using some theme, there are many of the themes in the novel that will helps the reader know the significance that is happening in Abel’s life.
