We are up past midnight every night doing the homework that six different teachers assign! If you want us to keep our grades up and succeed, giving us more work and more stress is not the way to do it. Homework should be eliminated from Yucaipa High School in order for the students to be more focused in class the next day. With all of the homework that we are given most students aren’t getting enough sleep which makes us less focused in class the next day. Homework also adds to the pressure of being in high school; we have to prepare for college which means we have to get really good grades, there’s social pressure, and we’re trying to figure out what kind of person we’ll be. The majority of the students at YHS participate in extracurricular activities, and most of us have to practice for a sport every night which means we have less time to finish our homework and get to bed at a reasonable hour.

To much homework may cause more harm than good. In my sophomore year being a student-athlete was a huge challenge. I would drown in homework every single night after getting home from basketball practice at 5. I would stay up until 1 a.m doing all my homework, when I would get tired I would plead with my sister to help me finish my homework I had left to do. I became stressed with 7 hours of school and then 2 hours of basketball practice and then spending all night working on my assignments. I would go to school exhausted and in fear of how much homework I would receive that day. This new school year as a junior, I chose to challenge myself even more with honor classes, leadership, and an AP class. I knew this year would bring upon more challenges then the previous year, since I had never taken an AP class. I decided to give up basketball because it was taking up too much time off my homework which would deprive me from sleep. Basketball was a sport I dreamed of playing for the rest of my school high school years. I dreamed of being recognized by my coach as “Dulce Melo a center-forward that has been playing since freshman year, who has improved so much, and trained so hard to become part of the girls Polytechnic Basketball team.” I had given up on that dream, I was no longer part of the schools student-athlete association I was just a student. High school is another vast world where one can explore the depths of the teenage experience: the hell that lies in the dark, bottomless abyss and the ominous heaven with everlasting light and everything else in between. On top of this perpetual rollercoaster of emotions, there’s this other dark force that looms over the head of every student, the beast that devours all happiness in life: homework. Assignments can be tedious and are stacked on top of a student’s busy lifestyle, leading to sleepless nights and weariness. Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). This, unfortunately, is almost a complete lie. It is true that homework can provide some academic advantages, however these benefits almost only affect those in upper high school grades 10 through 12. And to make things worse, these benefits are only gained with moderate to light amounts of homework, so most of these students never reap the benefits of homework. This is because they are simply given way too much. Most high school students receive between 90 minutes and two hours of homework per night, and some students up to three hours.

When I ponder of this idea, so many things pop into my head. People have a lot of opinions on the idea that freedom needs to be won over and over. Some people contradict that idea and think that when you win freedom, it’s done and we’re free. Other people, such as me, think that freedom is won repetitively.
