Ms. Provost recognizes that she is the leader of a group that is mainly made up of men, but she views all Border Patrol agents equally. Ms. Provost sums up her feelings by stating, “What I mean is I see myself as a Border Patrol agent. And no difference between female agents, male agents-we’re all border patrol agents” (Chung, 2017, p. 3).
The Homeland Security Unit works with the Fire Department, the local Homeland Security Unit based in San Francisco, NCRIC, the San Francisco Sheriffs’ Department, Coast Guard, National Guard, and the Department of Emergency Service to name just a few. Monthly meetings are held to plan for natural disasters but not specifically for acts of terrorism. Currently we are working on an evacuation plan in the case of a natural disaster. This plan would identify specific locations for the public to meet in the event of a natural disaster. These locations would be the used as a meet up point to transported individuals out of San Francisco in cases of an emergency.
The mission of the Department of Homeland Security is “to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards” (DHS). Homeland Security’s mission is “to secure the nation from the many threats we face. With honor and integrity, we will safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.”[3]
The first area is the Department of Homeland Security’s mission. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created in 2002 by the Homeland Security Act. In 2003 the DHS started their operations. The DHS primary responsibilities and objectives includes prevention, protection, and response to issues that threaten national security. There are five core missions that define the DHS: Managing and securing our nation’s borders, strengthening security initiatives to help prevent terrorism, administering and enforcing the nation’s immigration laws, ensuring that the nation can rebound fast and or prevent disasters, and ensuring the internet is secure by instituting safeguards that protect the nation against cyber-attacks. Police officers can hold you for up to fourteen days if you are arrested under the Terrorism Act. Which includes any person that engages in domestic terrorism, any act dangerous to human life, that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to intimidate a civilian population, influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion. Indefinite detention is the incarceration of a person by a national government without trial. Government officials should not have the right to detain suspected terrorists without trial because it violates the essence of American process and the rule of law.
Department of homeland security has the office of intelligence and analysis coordinates with the intelligence received from the DHS agencies. Also, intelligence information was shared with other agencies on a need to know basis in the past. The reason for that is because federal agencies were unwilling to work with the state and local agencies (Walker, 2016). Later the model of thinking got changed because it was unacceptable. As of now, the state, local, and federal agencies have fusion centers as a system of sharing information.
For this week’s forum we were asked to choose 5 research topics relating to homeland security list them, explain why we are interested in them, and tell the class what we would like to learn if we were writing a paper on them. I chose the topics I did because It seems like to me like most people look at the Department of homeland Security (DHS) and mainly focus on the subjects of border and port physical security without knowing exactly how much goes into ensuring the security of the American people. The topics I chose to list after poking around the internet a little are as follows.
Homeland Security was created before the 9/11 terrorist attack ever occurred, there were already discussions being made by elected officials. The officials were analyzing possible threats since the late 1990’s, when the bombings occurred with the World Trade Center in 1993, Oklahoma City 1995, and the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. When those attacks occurred, this is when our nation was exposed to the vulnerability of our nation’s security (Noftsinger, J.B., Newbold, K.F., Wheeler, J.K., 2007). This is when the federal commissions started to investigate the preparedness of the United States and provide recommendations to support such efforts. When the terrorist attacked our nation on 9/11, this is when the federal government
