Have you ever had to do something really hard that you didn’t want to do? Did you run away because of it? Didi everything turn out the right way? Holes is a book by Louis Sachar about a boy called Stanley Yelnats. I think that the theme for holes is perseverance because he escapes Camp Green Lake, survives in the desert, and overcomes poverty and becomes rich. In the book Holes Stanley’s friend Zero runs away, and leaves Stanley no choice but to go find him. Stanley escapes Camp Green Lake to find a desert waiting for him. Stanley escaped, but it may be that last thing he does. “Walking helped calm him down and allowed him to think clearly. He doubted he could make it to Big Thumb.”(Louis Sachar, pg.149). He heads off with Zero holding him back. “The sploosh had saved Zero’s life, but it was destroying him from the inside.” (Louis Sachar, pg.160-161). This quote shows how Zero and Stanley have to survive through hard times. At this point Zero is dying from the sploosh. Their only hope is God’s Thumb. Stanley and Zero find food and water on God’s thumb. They survive and head out to dig one last hole, but they don’t have a life to go back to. Stanley’s family is about to get kicked out of their house and Zero has nothing. Stanley remembers digging a hole and finding a golden lipstick tube. Stanley sets out to find Kissin Kate’s treasure. The last reason is overcoming poverty, Stanley and Zero find the treasure. “Stanley and Zero each received less than a million dollars.” (Louis Sachar, pg.230). This quote tells us about the money Stanley and Zero received and how they overcome their trials. The main idea is that you have to keep on going and never give up, which shows us that you have to have perseverance. I think this because he escapes from Camp Green Lake, survives in the desert, and overcomes poverty. All in all Holes was a great book about a kind called Stanley Yelnats.
