People similar to Adolf Hitler and Barack Obama come to mind when power is brought up. They have control over entire nations, and are two well knows people in the world. Although somebody like Barack Obama is famous for his power and uses it for the greater good, other people like Adolf Hitler are notorious for using his power to hurt others and to help themselves. There have been many different ways power is used in the world since the beginning of time. Abraham Lincoln once said “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.” Lincoln is saying that if you give a man power, he will either use it to help people, or help himself. Most of the time, this is shown with politicians, such as China’s Bo Xilai, but for him he did not get away with it. This man had become high in power in the Chinese government, and has now been caught with abusing power and corruption. CNN covered this story, and said “According to the document, Bo, as a civil servant, took advantage of his position to seek profits for others and accepted an "extremely large amount" of money and properties in return. He also embezzled a huge amount of public money and abused his power, seriously harming the interests of the state and the people.” Bo becoming high in the government of China and abusing his power by spending tons of public money for himself and harmed interests of the state and the people shows how becoming a highly ranked person in politics tends to corrupt people. Power corrupting one who is high in politics is highlighted in the book “In The Time of The Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez with the character Trujillo. This character slowly rose to power in the Dominican Republic, and used his power in a sinister way. The character Sinita was describing her family’s history with this ruler when she said “My uncles, they had a plan to do something to Trujillo, but somebody told on them, and all three were shot, right on the spot.” (In the Time of the Butterflies 1:2:56 Julia Alvarez) These men being shot dead just because they had an idea of stopping Trujillo’s rise to power and somebody had told on them to the government exemplifies how much power Trujillo had, and how he was unlawful. He could make two people he did not enjoy dead in an instant, and his people would listen to him and do it. Everyone was too frightened of this man of high influence, so they did haunting actions such as murder.
