An archetype is a model of a character, that reflects what everyday people believe how a character should look or act in a situation. Archetypes help the reader easily understand a character’s purpose, and follow commonly accepted universal traits. Two recognizable archetypes include The Villain and The Hero. In the book Highly Illogical Behavior, Lisa Praytor is willing to do anything to be accepted into a psychological college. She uses the town hermit, who is known as Solomon Reed to promote herself for college acceptance. Lisa’s decisions and behavior present her as The Manipulator, (a person who plays with people, situations, or opportunities to get what they want) who is self-absorbed, determined, and underhanded. Specifcally, the text says, “‘I want to meet Solomon Reed. I don’t know why I need to do it, but I do…’ ‘Lisa, you don’t even know the guy.’ ‘I know. But what if I can help him, Clark?’... ‘I’m not stupid,’ he interrupted. ‘This is for the essay, right?’ She didn’t say anything, but she nodded her head with her eyes lowered, afraid to see the disapproval on his face… Dear Solomon, You don’t know me and I doubt you’ve ever even heard of me, but my name is Lisa Praytor and I want to be your friend… I know you have chosen to live a certain way and I respect that.” This excerpt explains that Lisa was attempting to be friends with Solomon just to complete the essay. The type of narration, the plot’s rising action, and the overall imprint that is left on the reader, pushes this book above and beyond. Whaley creates a picture for the reader by using third- person omniscient point of view. This method helps the reader better understand the main characters. The rising action development was extremely easy to follow. The descriptions of the characters and the background information helps explained how the story was laid out. Also, the author seemed like he wanted the reader to realize the purpose of the three-way friendship.
