Archetypes of a Human “We meet ourselves time and time again in a thousand disguises on the path of life” (Jung). Writer’s usually have archetypes in their stories to engage the reader's understanding. Throughout the book Wild by Cheryl Strayed, she encounters several archetypes both positive and negative. She was impacted by the people, which made her accomplish her journey hiking the Pacific Crest Trail alone and getting herself back together. There are various archetypes that play a big role in Cheryl's physical and emotional journey. The archetypes make her who she is today and without them she wouldn't be able to transform. Strayed’s brother Leif plays the role of a trickster because he does not care about the health of her mother. Strayed states, “ I’ll come back with leif. When she hear his name she opened her eyes: blue and blazing, the same as they’d always been. How can you not be mad at him? I asked bitterly for perhaps the tenth time” (Strayed 24-25). It caused a problem tot Cheryl because they ended up not seeing her mother for the last time alive. Strayed portrayed the negative figure of herself representing things she did not like and would like to eliminate. Being with a lot of men affected her she wanted to supposedly not sleep with men, but she still did. There was many occasions she had sexual relationships with men she met in the Pacific Crest Trail. Strayed says, “We spent most of the summer having adventurous sex and doing heroin” (Strayed 53). Although she finally got over her shadow. “For once I didn’t ache for a companion. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed is a book about several events that took place in her life after her mom died and how she lost everything including herself and made the impulsive decision to walk the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. This book was possibly intended for people who have been in the same situation as she has been: going through the loss of a loved one or just feeling like you have nothing left. “The archetype is probably Jung’s most difficult concept. Archetypes are inherited predispositions to respond to the world in certain ways. They are primordial images, representations of the instinctual energies of the collective unconscious” (Frager). The archetypes in Jung’s analysis are the shadow, anima, animus and self. Beginning with the shadow, this to be a person of the same sex but possessing different traits. The Wicked Witch represents the shadow, the dark or unconscious part of the personality that the conscious ego tries to ignore. Along with the witch, her heinous flying monkeys could be categorized into this archetype. The Wicked Witch of the West is a dark, controlling presence who seeks to dominate and control. Any person seen throughout the world could be symbolized by the witch as a foreboding character and one who thought all was right with their plan of action, hence a universal
Straying away from life as a whole only to be alone, some may say is the strong way to heal themselves when dealing with extreme grief or a major crisis . In the book Wild, twenty-two year old Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost it all. Dealing with the loss of her mother, her family torn to pieces, and her very own marriage was being destroyed right before her very eyes. Living life with nothing more to lose, lifeless, she made the most life changing decision of her life. Strayed never seems remorseful on her decisions to up and leave everything behind while deciding to flee from it all. This being her way of dealing with life, it shows her as being strong; a woman of great strength and character. She shows personal strength, which is more than just a physical word. It is a word of very high value and can only be defined by searching deep within your very own soul.
An archetype is a model of a character, that reflects what everyday people believe how a character should look or act in a situation. Archetypes help the reader easily understand a character’s purpose, and follow commonly accepted universal traits. Two recognizable archetypes include The Villain and The Hero. In the book Highly Illogical Behavior, Lisa Praytor is willing to do anything to be accepted into a psychological college. She uses the town hermit, who is known as Solomon Reed to promote herself for college acceptance. Lisa’s decisions and behavior present her as The Manipulator, (a person who plays with people, situations, or opportunities to get what they want) who is self-absorbed, determined, and underhanded.
When the story begins, the hero meets a herald who will bring changes to the hero’s life. For example, Campbell uses the beginning of the Grimm brothers’ “The Frog Prince.” A young princess meets a frog who wants to help her by returning her missing golden ball. Campbell says that the frog “signified no more than the coming of adolescence” (Campbell 42). Sometimes the hero will reject the call and a herald must aid them in answering it. In the example Campbell gave, the princess originally rejected the frog, but determined to make sure the princess kept her promise, the frog followed her until the king made her.
An archetype is a human experience or symbol that is universally known and accepted. Archetypes can be images or stories passed on through history. Carl Jung, a prominent psychiatrist in the early 1900’s, used archetypes in his theory about the human psyche and how humans can recognize these symbols because they reside in the collective human subconscious. Some common examples of archetypes are The Hero, The Mentor, The Mother, The Villain and many more. Archetypes like these can be seen in everyday things like books, tv or movies. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. This paper will explore the differing perspectives of the concerned camp, sanguine camp, and impatient camp. In addition, each camps view, policy agenda, and values that underlie their argument on hunger will be discussed.

The author uses a humorous tone to talk about her living in China. In literature, Archetypal Criticism is a critical approach where the reader interprets the meaning of a story by looking at the archetypal characters, events, and symbols that it contains. In general, an archetype is a universal, primordial representation of an event or character that is seen as a general blueprint for stories and myths, such as the Hero or Death and Rebirth (Meyer 1587). Archetypes can be very important in identifying and supporting a theme by giving us background and references for aspects throughout the story. Carol Joyce Oates uses a couple vital archetypes in her short story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” a tale about Connie, a teenage girl, who goes through an innocence to experience situation, signifying a transition from childhood to adulthood.

Archetypes help a reader to gain a better understanding of who a character in the work is on the inside. This deeper insight into the character allows the reader to follow the flow of the story easier and more effectively. There are many different archetypes that can help to advance the story. One of the most useful in advancing this story is the typical powerful character. The book, Into the wild, takes us into the world of a young man named Christopher Johnson McCandless. He travelled across the western United States from 1990 to 1992, and on April 28, 1992, he started his last adventure and walked into the wilds of Alaska. About 112 days later, he died of starvation. Unsurprisingly, public opinion polarized on his behavior. Some may admire his courage and noble ideals, though some regard him as an idiotic and arrogant narcissist. Although he died on his way to find the truth and back to nature, I believe that Chris McCandless should be considered as a hero, but I cannot completely approve of all his behaviors.
Chris McCandless and Buck serve as examples of the archetype of the wild through their experiences of leaving where they feel most comfortable and answering the call of the wild. They show that each experience is inimitable because the wild is unique to every individual. For Buck, the wild is a place outside of civilization and his dependence on man, where the external threats of nature exist and he must prove himself as a true animal with instincts for survival. In McCandless' case, the place outside of civilization is actually an escape from his fears because the wild for him is in relationships, where the threat of intimacy exists and he must learn to trust others for happiness. This is because for each of us, the wild is what we fear, a place outside of our comfort zone and, as McCandless' experience shows, not necessarily a physical place. To render to the call of the wild we must leave everything that makes us feel protected, and we must make ourselves completely vulnerable to the wild. McCandless and Buck show that in order to successfully respond to the call of the wild we must relinquish control and drop our guards, until ultimately the fear subsides and we find peace with ourselves as well as with our environments.
