The Great War of Dryden Elementary The meeting began swiftly after school on an unusually cold autumn afternoon. We took our seats in the snug recliners of the Gerardi residence’s movie theater. We were promptly delivered the refreshments that all great leaders thrive off of: Lemon Lime Gatorade and Double Stuffed Oreos. After some consideration, we reached a conclusion. 30 minutes of homework was excessive. No talking time was in direct violation of our first amendment rights.No fifth graders should have to learn about such convoluted subjects as algebra. War was necessary. A coalition would be formed to pressure Ms. Kim to ease up on the rigid regulation she imposed upon us. The next day the war began. The war against Ms. Kim was one of escalation. We began by engaging in petty disobedience like refusing to complete our homework or talking during quiet time but we soon realized we needed to up our ante to obtain the freedom we so dearly desired. The contract forbade me from my usual forms of disobedience and took the coveted Cubs game at the end of the year hostage as an incentive for me to follow its contents. While reading this dreaded piece of parchment I spotted the coalition outside the classroom waiting for my return from the gulag. I hastily scribbled my name and the bottom of the page and burst through the classroom door while holding the paper vehemently in my hand. At first, I noticed a look of confusion and then a deep stare directly behind me. Although I had not yet turned around, I could feel Ms. Kim’s stern glare piercing through the back of my head.
