As a new student to the Merced Union High School District, I knew I would not be able to make it through my last year of high school without any help. My mission the first day at my new school was to build a friendly relationship with my teachers and other staff. Having the support of teachers and of my counselor gave me a sense of relief because I knew I was going to get the help I needed.
Because of my family’s background, having an education is what my mom would consider a luxury. Both my parents as children were pulled out of school to continue work duties at home. My mission statement has not changed. I still feel the way about teaching as I did then. I want students to want to come to school to learn. As my education journey comes closer to the end, I have learned many strategies and techniques to help me accomplish this goal. Teaching can be challenging just a learning can be for students, making it as interesting and fun as possible will ease that in some way. I firmly believe when students have confidence in themselves they will succeed, I want to help build the confidence. I have worked with special education student long enough to see it only takes a like gain to bring a smile to their face. Sometimes climbing one step may seem as if they climbed a mountain, and I want to share in their accomplishments.
I cannot even begin to explain how it varies between how my mom and her seven siblings were all taught and raised. My older sister Tasha was usually the reason most of the rules I have today, were put in place. She was kind of a rebel child. Brittany followed in her footsteps. I threw my parents for a loop when I graduated not only from Utica High School, but from Career Technical Education Center of Licking County with honors and passing my registry exam becoming a Registered Medical Assistant. I really surprised them when I decided to go to college. I was their first child to attend college. My mother was extremely proud of me and even cried because she was so blessed to be able to afford to send me through college. I was raised in an encouraging household where both of my parents greatly valued education. Although they were high school graduates, neither could afford to attend college; a combination of family and financial woes ultimately halted their path. As a result, my parents frequently reminded me that getting a good education meant better opportunities for my future. To my parents, that seemed to be the overarching goal: a better life for me than the one they had. My parents wanted me to excel and supported me financially and emotionally of which the former was something their parents were not able to provide. Their desire to facilitate a change in my destiny is one of many essential events that contributed to my world view.
The support that students from Middle School 244 receive from their teachers and counselors more than just surprise me. I would personally expect that level of compassion from a high school guidance counselor at the earliest. I believe it is that kind of support that will rebuild a school community, reshape students, and revitalize hope into not only the students but also the school’s faculty.
They tied education to success and my dad always voiced that he desired better for me than he had for himself, even though he became quite successful despite not having a high school diploma. Consequently, it was quite natural for me to pursue college after high school, as that was the subject of numerous discussions in my household.
My family income is not that high. Both of my parents are high school drop outs, so they never made it to college. As we all know finding a job with a well-paid job can be dreadful without a high school diploma or a college diploma, but they manage through. To study for pediatrician is very expensive, but I and both my parents work hard enough to be in college. I am the first in my family generation to be in college and have a career set. It is not easy to be the first because at times it can be very frustrated because if I were to fail every single person in my family well look and maybe even be disappointed not mention my younger sister and cousin. They all look up to me and feel proud that I am the first to break that chain.
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.
School counseling has evolved over the years into a significant component of the educational system. School counselors are taking on new roles in schools as leaders, working with “school administration and staff in developing student attitudes and behavior which are necessary to maintain proper control, acceptable standards of self-discipline and a suitable learning environment within the school” (Secondary School Counselor 2012). Counselors work in “diverse community settings designed to provide a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services” (Counselors, 2010). When working in a school district as a counselor, you can either be an elementary school counselor, middle school counselor or a high school counselor. Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. Following their guide, I have always valued and tried to get the most of any educational opportunity I have had. Having grown up in a business family, I have always been interested in focusing my career in the business field. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy.
My parents have this perfect life for me pictured in their heads, and the first thing they see me doing is going to college. They expect the best of me, and so by going to college, I will not only have fulfilled their goals for me, but I will have accomplished one of the goals I have set for myself. In our culture, when parents come to the age where they can’t support themselves, it is the duty of the children to look after them.
Let’s flash back in time to before our college days. Back to then we had lunch trays filled with rubbery chicken nuggets, stale pizza, and bags of chocolate milk. A backpack stacked with Lisa Frank note books, flexi rulers, and color changing pencils. The times where we thought we wouldn’t make it out alive, but we did. Through all the trials and tribulations school helped build who I am today and shaped my future. From basic functions all the way to life-long lessons that helped shape my character.
Growing up in a family in which both my parents had master's degrees, it was naturally expected that I would go to college, and for both my own benefit as well as pleasing my parents, I chose to pursue so-called "higher education". Stepping up to this "higher" plateau is no small matter, however.
I take pride in knowing that my teachers see how hard I work and that my dedication to my education is paying off. Last trimester I got approval to take a heavier course load than recommended. I have taken advantage of the college classes offered to learn as much as possible before going to college. I work just as hard outside of school.

Through committed support from educators, faculty, staff, parents, and the community, I will advance learning to support my students. This will allow students to become confident, creative, motivated, technology-ready students. I will provide leadership to achieve these standards of excellence each student deserves for a technology driven society.
