Throughout the centuries leading up to the 1800s, only a few women, both fictional and in real-life, had achieved the accomplishment of being an upstanding role model for third-wave feminist women. Thankfully, in 1850, another one joined the ranks: Hester Prynne. Exemplifying the true spirit of feminism within The Scarlet Letter, she managed to become a thorn in the side of the patriarchal Puritan society, albeit with some missteps. Because of her strong stance against the patriarchy, which was displayed in her refusal to reveal the identity of her partner in sin to the oppressive male authorities and her struggle to survive and thrive as a single parent in the male-dominated society, Hester Prynne became a wonderful example for third-wave feminists.
