For this essay I have chosen an area of the coastline in Hervey Bay to represent and explain the coastal and environmental issues. The area of coastline chosen is at Torquay beach, between Bideford Street and Macks Road.

The natural features of this beach include white sand, sand dunes, vegetation and animals. Along the foreshore from Bideford Street to Macks Road there are a number of areas that have been impacted by people. There has been constructions taking place right on the beach front, including the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club, Sea Scouts, Hervey Bay Sailing Club and a boat ramp, the Torquay pier and The Train Park near the Sailing Club. There was also large amount of removal of vegetation that took place for these buildings and particularly the Caravan Park.
The beach, as mentioned in the introduction, has some coastal and environmental issues. These issues include erosion, removal of vegetation and pollution. Although it may not seem like there are many issues these issues are big. On top of these issues there are social, economic and environmental issues as well.

If the replacement sand is too gritty or a different colour then the beach will look messy and it won’t feel as nice on your feet as the soft sand. Also with beach nourishment there is a low environmental impact. The cost for beach nourishment is $35 per cubic metre and it has to be redone/ maintained every 7 years. This cost is based on the sand being commercially supplied or the sand being dredged in water less than 25 metres in depth.
