The Hershey Company was mainly criticized for their mistreatment of foreign workers, especially foreign students who were forced into harsh labor. Hundreds of students coming from China, Nigeria, Romania, and Ukraine travelled to the United States to attend a summer visa program started by the Hershey Company. In theory the students were going to be taught English, make money and learn what it is like to be in the United States. In actuality, the four hundred students were doing strenuous labor, lifting heavy Reese’s candies, Kit-Kts and Almond Joys. They did night
Hershey recently sued Let’s Buy British Imports or L.B.B., a british chocolate company to stop the imports of their chocolates into the United States. The Hershey company claimed that L.B.B.’s product resembled theirs: “This includes Cadbury chocolates, KitKat bars made in Britain, Toffee Crisps and Yorkie chocolate bars”. Jeff Beckman, the Hershey Company’s spokesman stated that “It is important for Hershey to protect its trademark rights and to prevent consumers from being confused or misled when they see a product name or product package that is confusingly similar to a Hershey name or trade dress” This lawsuit has made chocolate consumers immensely unhappy. Nicky Perry, one of the most vocal about this ban stated the following: “Due to legal action by the so-called chocolate maker Hersheys, we can no longer import the real Cadbury chocolate from England...They want us to sell their dreadful Cadbury approximation but we can 't in good conscience sell you such awful chocolate when we have made our reputation on selling you the yummy real English stuff." Madelyn McQueen - Twin Falls Idaho Have you ever wondered how the delicious, classic treat came to be? Well, any event you can think of after the date of 1938, the cookie was bound to be there. Several stories about how the country’s favorite baked good came to be, have been spread and believed by thousands. For example, Ruth Wakefield unexpectedly ran out of nuts for a regular ice-cream cookie recipe and, in desperation, replaced them with chunks chopped out of a bar of Nestle bittersweet chocolate. Another story is said that the vibrations from an industrial mixer caused chocolate stored on a shelf in the Toll House kitchen to fall into a bowl of cookie dough as it was being mixed. Sadly, all of these stories are false, says Carolyn Wyman in her recently published “Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Book.” In her book, Wyman offers a more believable version of how the cookie came to be. Wyman argues, that Ruth Wakefield, who had a degree in household arts and a reputation for perfectionism, would not have allowed her restaurant, which was famed for its desserts, to run out of such

Throughout time children have worked myriad hours in hazardous workplaces in order to make a few cents to a few dollars. This is known as child labor, where children are risking their lives daily for money. Today child labor continues to exist all over the world and even in the United States where children pick fruits and vegetables in difficult conditions. According to the article, “What is Child Labor”; it states that roughly 215 million children around the world are working between the ages of 5 and 17 in harmful workplaces. Child labor continues to exist because many families live in poverty and with more working hands there is an increase in income. Other families take their children to work in the fields because they have no access to childcare and extra money is beneficial to buy basic needs. Although there are laws and regulations that protect children from child labor, stronger enforcement is required because child labor not only exploits children but also has detrimental effects on a child’s health, education, and the people of the nation.

Milton Hershey changed the candy making industry by turning his caramel business into a chocolate industry, caring enough to influence his company to help organizations and individuals, and by remaining successful for over a hundred years.
Chocolate companies changed from minimal production to massive manufacturing. Thus, targeting different market segments that weren’t possible to reach due to the high cost of the good. According to UNICEF, there are an estimated one hundred and fifty eight million children aged five to fourteen in child labour worldwide. Millions of children are engaged in dangerous situations or conditions, such as working in mines, working with chemicals and pesticides in agriculture or working with dangerous machinery. They are everywhere but invisible, working as domestic servants in homes, labouring behind the walls of workshops, hidden from view in plantations. If there is nothing wrong with child labour, then why is the exploitation so secret? Do you ever wonder when you go into certain shops how a handmade t-shirt can be so cheap? Or on the other hand, products which are sold to us at extremely high prices and we assume...
Over time, the progress of ending child slavery in the chocolate industry has been improved. When the large chocolate corporations started making the changes needed, the issue of child slavery became a smaller problem. But there can always be more that can be done. Out of all the companies listed above, their collected income is a lot more than The Ivory Coast’s GDP, which is around 24 billion. Yet they have only helped built a small amount of the needed 36,000 schools in the country. Hopefully the chocolate companies will continue to help and stay on track when it comes to ending the problem that they knowingly contributed to for many years.
However, after large amounts of pressure from environmentalists, households and then businesses refusing to stock Cadburys chocolate, Cadburys finally conceded and moved back to the old recipe.
