In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien never wrote about a person being a hero; although, it seems to be traditional to have some sort of hero in war stories. In real life, we do not have heroes saving our butts every time we get into trouble. Children today have been growing up very sheltered and are taught that there will always a person there to help them along the way through life. Women in war stories were only heard of as nurses or when they were brought up by the men. Martha was one of them women brought up by soldiers. She, although without notice, kept Jimmy Cross sane by taking his mind off war. Cross is not the only one to love a woman who does not live him back. Soldiers use love all the time to help them cope with war whether if the love is real or not.
Mary Anne used to be known for keeping a soldier sane like Martha. However, Mary Anne went to Vietnam and was changed by the war. O’Brien helps break the stereotype of women by having Mary Anne joining the war, showing women can do anything a man can do. If a man can become a hero, so can a women. If he can fight in the war, she can too.
Nowadays, women are not just seen as nurses or lovers in war stories. They are soldiers, captains, and lieutenants. Women do not have it anymore easier in war than men do. They are not handed medals or become heroes painlessly. Although O’Brien respects women having stronger souls than credited, he still believes they must earn the characteristic of being a hero
