Henri Matisse, 1869-1954 was a French artist; who was not only a painter, but also a sculptor and a printmaker. He is best known as the leader of the fauvist movement, along with André Derain. The fauvist movement lasted a short period of time, it began in 1898 and ended in 1908, the movement got it’s name from the French expression, Les Fauves, which is translated to: The wild beasts. A few well-known artists, such as, Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and Gauguin, largely influenced Matisse’s paintings. One of Matisse’s most famous paintings and which I’ll be writing about is, The Dessert: Harmony in Red. Harmony in Red was painted in 1908, where the artist used oil colors on canvas with the use of strong, complementary colors. The painting is a fauvist painting, an example of impressionism, due to the lack of the central focal point in it. According to art critiques, Harmony in Red is considered a masterpiece. The painting is currently located in Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. One interesting fact that caught my attention was the fact that the painting was originally named Harmony in Blue, but because Matisse was not pleased with the color blue, he instead used his favored color, red. The painting certainly has an unusual color creation, red on the walls and the tablecloth
