Music has been used all over the world, in every culture to tell stories, celebrate, and rebel. Whatever the reason, all music can be used as a representation of a person’s feelings throughout life. In the 1930s and 1940s, the Swing era, music helped as an outlet for people to forget the hard times and fear during the second World War. In the 1990s, music was filled with grunge, rock, pop and hip-hop to convey the sense of misunderstanding teens felt during this generation. Over the years music has adapted according to the times, I personally, feel music can express my life based on where I’ve been, where I am, where I hope to be and the challenges I will face along the way.
In my life, my friends have always been there for me through thick and thin, the theme of friendship can be shown through Miley Cyrus’s “True Friend”, which for me, embodies my childhood. The mood of the song is faithful dreaming because both my life and the piece, revolve around dreaming for something more. The imagery used in the song, “Where troubles melt like lemon drops/ Away above the chimney tops” (“Kamakawiwo'ole”), helps add to the mood by imagining troubles melting away and leaving you. Garland also uses the metaphor “Birds fly over the rainbow/ Why then, oh why can't I?” (“Kamakawiwo'ole”). I believe the birds flying over the rainbow are people achieving their goals in life, the rainbow being everyone’s hopes and dreams. Therefore, if other people are reaching their dreams, then there should be no reason I can’t as well. The song resonates with me in my life right now because I’d like for my troubles to melt away, as would anyone; and the goals I want to reach in my life are not so far away because other people are reaching their own so I can attain my goals
