Many of us have probably heard the saying “ there are people that are leaders and others that are followers” at some point in our lives. We probably didn’t think much of the saying as a child but as an adult the term leader is viewed as a person who can lead or command a group, organization or even a country. Every organization must have a leader and the qualities that make a good leader varies as individuals fit into their leadership roles. There are some leaders who may not be energetic but somehow find a way to get the best out of people while others may appear too relaxed to be taken seriously. A key characteristic is inspirational motivation, which is the ability to inspire people and to create trust that gets people to act on the leaders vision. In addition, the leader should be able to help individuals experience the same passion and motivate them to fulfill their goals by clearly showing them the meaning and value of their work. Along with some of the typical qualities transformational leaders should hold such as trust, admiration, loyalty and respect, idealized influence is a characteristic they should strive to retain. Midterm Essay; Transformational Leadership Introduction There are many different styles of leadership that are used in business and in healthcare, from the laissez-faire, where the leader of the team has little or no input or control, to the autocratic style where the leader is more of a dictator and the leaders possess complete authority. With these two styles of leadership, the team may not thrive because of either too little or too much input or control by the leader. Leadership is increasingly important in today's society. Many experts and scholars point out that the current leadership crisis concerns moral and character problems in many leaders (Ahn, Ettner, & Loupin, 2012; Callahan, 2004; Wright & Quick, 2011). The following interview report is intended primarily for exploration and comparison of the traits and characteristics of leadership. A leader of a clinical medicine centre was interviewed for this report. The purpose of this report is to explore the leadership characters and traits, and how they can be developed in this turbulent environment. First, I make a brief introduction regarding the background of the respondent and her working environment. The report also describes this leader's personal and subjective perceptions in relation to a literature review which investigates the traits and characteristics of leadership. The report concludes with a comparison and discussion of the results of the clinical condition on the basis of the interview and literature review. At the same time, the report aims to put forward feasible and effective advice and specific programs for present and future leaders and managers in the health care system.
Transformational leadership is based on charisma designed to motivate and inspire. Transformational leaders redefine or change the status quo in order to enact a vision of a more satisfactory future state and they help followers to go beyond their own interests and consider the moral and ethical implications of their actions and goals (Avolio, 1999). HOW TO EXEMPLIFY TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP Leadership is the tender ability to coerce or influence someone greatly towards a specific goal. It is not about having full power or authority over aides but rather taking the initiative and desiring to serve other people. A true leader desires to serve others, whether overtly or covertly, coaching and motivating a team to achieve an inspiring goal. As George Bernard Shaw stated, “progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” and that is what defines a transformative leader. Transformative leadership is about being open to new ways when the old ways are not working out efficiently.
A transformational leader focuses on the development of their followers (Saxena, 2014). This type of leader aims to make the employee’s behavior congruent with the organization’s values (Saxena, 2014). Additionally, this type of leadership style requires the involvement of managers to assist in managing the delegation of tasks to the employees. Transformational leaders as change agents are beneficial because they encourage followers (i.e. followers) to embrace the organization’s vision to become part of the overall organization’s environment and work culture (Shankar & Sayeed, 2012). Transformational leadership style empowers employees through persuasion and empathic understanding (Shankar & Sayeed, 2012) to introduce new and controversial ideas.
Leadership in the medical field is vastly overlooked. Many people view leadership in medicine as a rise in ranks, in positions of power within a hospital or organization.
