The health care profession includes a great deal of body mechanics and knowledge of safe activities for clients. Performing these everyday skills with competency and having proper education on these tasks will increase positive client outcomes. They will also promote safety for healthcare workers and clients. Prior to clinical, I watched the First Health video that was created by the physical therapy staff at Moore Regional Hospital. I also watched the videos, “Lifting Safely to Prevent Injury” and “The Nursing Assistant: Range of Motion Exercises”, which were both on Medcom. The videos proved to be very informative about body mechanics, ambulation, patient safety, ROM, and healthcare provider safety. She also stated that when moving a patient you should always ask them to assist as much as possible, as long as their condition permits. The video also suggested counting three before moving a client and to have a partner to assist on the other side. A good way to move a patient who is larger is to put the bed into Trendelenberg which lowers the head of the patient’s bed. It is always important to assess any airway clearance issues when doing this since it might make it more difficult for the patient to breath. Also the bed should be flat when moving the patient up in bed, turning the patient, or positioning the patient, if condition permits. Heather also talked about proper positioning of patients. It is crucial to position patients at least every two hours to prevent bed sores, and the positioning for stroke patients is even more essential. Promoting extension of the limbs and arms are recommended for stroke patients. Stroke patients can be positioned on their weak or strong side, but the physical therapist in the video states that positioning on the weak side is best. When a
