“Clickety clack, clickety clack”, his heart racing, his fingers trembling, as he falls to the ground with shock, and fear. The tale of the Headless Horseman has been told for many generations, from culture to culture, inducing fear in the eyes all around the world. However, it does make a great Halloween costume for children, despite it’s unfriendly figure. It’s appearance, and not to mention his missing head, has enabled the mystical story of, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” And, no matter how the story of the Headless Horseman has changed, the clickety clacking of his horse, and the pumpkin on his saddle will always strike fear in boys and girls, especially near Halloween. Not only does the Headless Horseman roam the streets in search for his head, but his appearance makes him even scarier. The Headless Horseman wears a black coat, with a high collar. He even rides a black horse to match his murky taste in clothing. But, let's not forget his missing head, replaced by a pumpkin on his saddle, which makes the people of Sleepy Hollow, and other cultures and countries, even more frightened. Although, the people of Sleepy Hollow are mostly afraid of the Headless Horseman, because of the role that he played in the Revolutionary War. Hessians were mercenaries, or paid foreign soldiers, who fought against the Americans, and alongside the British, in the Revolutionary War. And, since English colonists were so afraid of the Hessians and the British invading their land during this war, or basically breaking into people's homes whenever they felt like it, made the thought of the Headless Horseman as a Hessian soldier, all that more
