The importance of wandlore in Harry Potter
Wands are what define being a wizard in the magical world. In J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series it is shown how important a wizard’s wand is, and how it can affect a wizard’s magical performance. The type of wood used, the core and the flexibility of the wand are all important parts in wandlore.
The type of wood used to create a wand is one of the most important aspects of the wand’s potential affinities for its future owner. There are over 30 types of woods that can be used to make wands , but holly, vinewood, elder, hawthorn, walnut, yew, and willow are some that can be linked to important characters in the Harry Potter series. Each wood has a specific tendency for a type of magic which it is best at. For example we have Harry’s wand which is made of holly, this wood is known for its ability to repel dark spirits and often chooses owners which have been chosen for a dangerous quest. This is very suitable for Harry since from birth he was destined to be “the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord” (Rowling, OotP, p.628) and one could say that this was his dangerous quest which he was chosen for. Harry after all is the chosen one. These insecurities contin...

Wh — what was there to be gained by refusing him?” (Rowling, PoA, p.240), this shows that he is constantly only thinking of himself and seeks the power so it will protect him. A wand’s flexibility is another vital part in determining a wizard of witch’s power.
Overall the three aspects of wand lore, the wood, the core and the flexibility all work together to make a truly unique wand. There are no two wands that are alike and no wand will work best as the wand that chose the wizard. Only the wand that is chosen for a certain witch a wizard has the capability of bringing out the best abilities in its owner. Therefore that is why it is so important that every witch and wizard use their own wand so that they can perform and protect themselves to the best of their abilities.
