Every person should be entitled to practice any religion they desire. A Jew's hardship is being of Jewish descent. During World War II, Jews were being persecuted for what religion they were following causing them hardships. They were cooped up in concentration camps, filled with fear and anxiety. For a Jew to live their life like how an Aryan would, had to hide. Even in hiding, they couldn't look out the window or be seem outside. They had no freedom. To assist a Jew was a ticket to a concentration camps. Jews were the vermin of the world. They thought bad about themselves and didn’t expect much due to everyone always looking down on them. They felt like they couldn't ask for much because it can lead to danger on both ends, so they had to take whatever was given to them. In The Book Thief, it talks about the consequences of being and helping a Jew. Max felt relieved and grateful when Hans agreed to help him and risk their lives in the process. It made him aware that there are people that are German blood that know what's right from wrong. The support he gets from the Hubermann's makes him realize there's more to life.
