Hardness test In this study hardness was determined using standard Rockwell A. The tests were conducted at room temperature and under ambient humidity conditions. Hardness testing machine (Avery Denison 6407 150Kgf) was used in the test. Tension test Tension tests were carried out on the various silica, alumina and carbon nanophased epoxy specimens according to DIN 53457 [15]. The test specimens were cut into strips of 170 mm length, 15 mm width and 3 mm thickness. Tension tests were carried out using a universal testing machine (LLOYD Instruments LR 300kN). The cross-head speed of the loading member was 2 mm/min. Six specimens are tested for each composition and the average value is calculated. The strain guage results are further monitored …show more content…

Theoretical prediction of tensile modulus Young’s modulus is the stiffness of a material at the elastic stage of the deformation process. It is enhanced by adding micro and nano-particles to a polymer matrix as hard particles have much higher stiffness than the matrix [16]. There are 181 Page 2 of 12 J Polym Res (2016) 23:181 many theoretical models [16] such as Paul model, Modified rule of mixtures model, and Counto model thatmay be used to predict the moduli of particulate polymeric composites. It is to be noted that these models make a number of assumptions. They assume that matrix and particles are linear-elastic, isotropic and there is perfect bonding between the particles and matrix. The particles are also assumed to be uniform in their aspect ratio and perfectly aligned in the direction of with the applied load. Models ignore any agglomeration and particleparticle interactions. The Paul model Paul [17, 18] assumed that the two components are in a state of macroscopically homogeneous stress and adhesion is perfect at the interface of a cubic inclusion in a cubic matrix. When a uniform stress is applied on the boundary, the elastic modulus of the particulate composite is given by: EC ¼ EM 1 þ ðm−1ÞV
