Hanging Fire Do you have a mom that goes to her room and stays in there with her phone? Well, I do. Whenever we get home from school my mom is always on her phone. She even get’s on her phone whenever we’re eating. Wherever we go she’s on her phone like at a hospital whenever we're waiting for something she’s on the phone. Like we mess around in the truck we tell my mom to keep her eyes on the road. Like we’re like everywhere we go she’s on her phone. Today’s world has become so dependent on technology that people can hardly be away from their cell phone. In Fahrenheit 451, Mildred portrays one of those people. In the article, “Have we become too dependent on smart phone technology?” a woman and her friends test just how long they can be away from their cell phones. “‘The first 30 minutes to an hour all we talked about was how we missed our phones,’ Erebia said” (Ortega 1). The quote goes to show that people can hardly have conversation with out their security blanket, better known as their smart phone. “Smart phone technology is a double-edged sword when it comes to communication. Some people may be so engrossed in their phones that they would rather focus on that than on the person right in front of them – this is the bad – he said” (Ortega 2). At the end of this article everyone can agree that technology has a power over our lives.
In the article entitled, “Our Cell Phones Ourselves”, Christine Rosen describes how cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. Without a doubt, cell phones are going to be a part of our world, but it is the responsibility of every cell phone owner to exercise self control and understand that a cell phone is nothing more than a device.
The two poems “Hanging Fire” and “Teenagers” both have some things in common, but also share some different concepts. The poem “Hanging Fire” main concept is talking about her fears, thoughts and worries. It’s also talking about how she has to go through life situations on her own The main concept of the short poem “Teenagers” is mostly talking about the lack of communication of her and her parents. As a teenager her two parents shut her out of her life with no explanation, Shut the doors along with their mouths. Catching Fire: How Coooking Made us Human by Richard Wrangham is a fresh perspective on the evolution of humankind. Wrangham has made a concentrated effort to prove that humans have evolved particular adaptations, like bipedalism, due to the introduction of cooked foods into their diet. In his book, he is legitimately arguing that humans are the way they are because early on in human evolution, early man discovered fire, discovered the joys of cooked foods, and developed all sorts of fascinating traits still being utilized today.
In 1967, a fire was started in Jay Mountain Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two young men, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade, were smoking and accidentally dropped a lit cigarette – but did not catch fire till later that day. With no idea of the future, a group of children and adults had a picnic. Some of the kids wandered off to the church, with no consent of any adult, right before the fire. Thankfully, none injured with the two young men saving their lives. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same for Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally – who was one of their close friend that happened to be with them at the time. Ponyboy had minor injuries, with only a couple of bruises and cuts. Dally broke his arm trying to drag out Johnny and for the most part he was okay.
As terrible as the Great Chicago Fire was to the city of Chicago back in 1871, the lessons learned from this disaster and the reconstruction that followed from the ashes and rubble actually helped turn Chicago into one of the great cities in the United States. New York City in the early 20th Century was a place where immigrants came to work and to start a new life in America. During that time, over twelve million immigrants came to the United States, and most of them worked in factories or in hard labor jobs (liberty). One of the many jobs available to immigrants was in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, which was owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. The conditions at this factory were unsanitary and cruel just like in many other factories and sweatshops of that time. Workers were treated and paid unfairly. On March 11th, 1911, a fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory killing nearly two-hundred women, men, and children. This essay will explain the tragic events that led to the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, the women’s strike, and unfair wages during the late 1910s.
Today in the Twenty-First century we have surpassed many technological advancements and excelled far past what we would have ever thought. A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.
A recent outbreak in teen texting is taking a toll on their daily lives. Many teenagers have cell phones. Their parents get them phones for their safety and well-being, but is that what teens really use them for? I for one know that I rarely call my parents or use my phone for important reasons. Most of the time, I’m scrolling through Instagram and snapchat, to keep up with everyone that I will see in less than a day. Altho somewhat similar the two stories are very different in many ways. The first story is called “Mystery of Heroism” by Stephen Crane and the other one is “To Build a Fire” by Jack London. Both of the books are part of the short story genre and realism stories. The author's purpose for writing the “Mystery of Heroism” is to tell a story about a brave man who went to get water for a dying man. The purpose for writing “To Build a Fire” is to tell about a man and his dog and how he tried to fight the below freezing temperatures to stay alive. Both authors use realism because they want to tell real stories about people and how they had to overcome struggles in their lifetime. These two stories have similarities but they are way more different than anything else. One of the stories is about a man who has to overcome fear to get water for a man.
This morning, Jane was working on her French Language project and every few seconds, “brring brrring brrring” friends texting her right and left. “Aarg!” How can she get anything done! It is impossible to complete any tasks from start to finish without the smart phone begging for attention. Does this sound familiar? We, especially teenagers, are familiar with this kind of situation. It is a huge distraction that interrupts everything we do. If so, why does not she just turn her phone off? Why cannot she stop herself from focusing on it?

In a world today where sending a text message containing the message “I luv you,” is equally powerful to that statement said in person to your significant other. Today’s generation is surrounded by the constant need to have technology and mainly cell phones at your fingertips. Gone are the days when people would talk to one another whilst standing in line, now it is all about having and using your cell phone to pass the time. All of this takes bondage on having an interpersonal relationship with each other and conversing face-to-face. Mainly, cell phones are a handicap to this and they inhibit the ability for a male to communicate with a female or vice versa, leading to the foreign territory of intimate relationships. The main reaction to this is saying that technology has shaped this motive and texting is a way of life. One can beg to differ saying that there just needs to be a new understanding of when, where and how much a cell phone is used around other people. This understand standing starts with coming up close and personal with why it happens. It can be said that this boils down to it being a physical distraction, emotional distraction, and a handicap to society’s ability to have interpersonal communication.
