In Sherwood Anderson's "Hands", the protagonist, Wing Biddlebaum is portrayed as the towns' mystery who lives alone in a small house, and although he has been living in Winesburg Ohio for twenty years Wing "did not think of himself as in any way part of the life of the town" (213). Wing cannot express himself entirely. The reason for this is his hands. He is afraid of them and tries to keep them hidden from society and from himself. In this touching story the unjust allegations of a small community have stripped Wing Biddlebaum of his identity and have forced him to become a prisoner unto himself.

Adolph Myers, a kind and gentle man "[ is] meant by nature to be a teacher of youth"(215), however, the towns' people can not understand that the male school teacher - a not so common phenomenon at the time--spoke soothingly with his hands and voice only to "carry a dream into the young minds" (215) of his students. The young school teacher was wrongfully accused of doing "unspeakable things" to his students, and as a result was beaten and run out of town without being given a chance to explain the his love for the children was pure, and that he had done nothing wrong. Therefore, as young Adolph Myers, whose only crime is of being a good and caring person runs out of Pennsylvania, old Wing Biddlebaum, the lonely and confused victim of a close-minded society walks into Winesburg Ohio.

Wing Biddlebaum's hands were once the root of his expression, but when the towns' people of Pennsylvania stole that from him, they also took away his identity, leaving the poor old man "submerged in a sea of doubts" (213), and frightened by his own passions. He cannot trust himself anymore and his own hands terrify him. Without his means of expression and his self-confidence, Wing Biddlebaum does not know who or what he is. George Willard is Wing's only connection to humanity, and without that hope of a visit from the young reporter, Wing has nothing to hope for. Only when Wing is with George does his true self begin to emerge and the school teacher bottled up inside begins giving the young boy heartfelt advice. As Wing becomes inspired, his hands begin to come alive, however the cruel reminder of his past quickly sets in and Wing once again closes up into his shell, to live a life of unbearable solitude.
