Hand Washing Observation

It is easy to assume that everyone know how to wash their hand correctly. People never think twice about whether they are actually washing their hands correctly or not. Children are just told to wash hands, but are never showed the correct techniques of hand washing. I came to this conclusion when I observed students washing hands at a private elementary school.
I was given an opportunity to observe at a private elementary school. The first thing I noticed was that they put cleanliness as a top priority. From teachers to students, they would watch their hands many times throughout the day. The classrooms are close to the sinks, so that students are able to reach the sink whenever they pass the door. This way the students had a habit of watching their hands frequently. I noticed that students of 3rd and 4th grade would wash their hands often at around noon. I decided to show them the correct way of washing their hands. With the teachers permission I took the class near the sink and demonstrated the correct way to wash hands. First, I pulled down the paper towel and opened the faucet to wet my hands and wrists under warm running water. Second, I applied soap and started rubbing my hands together, while having the children sing the abc song, for about 20-25 seconds. Finally, I rinsed my hands and took the paper towel to wipe my hands. I told the students to make sure they don’t touch the faucets with your clean hands and use the same paper towel to close the running water. I made sure to let few of the students try, so that I know they understood and paid attention. The second time I observe them washing hands some students followed my techniques, while others went on doing it the way they did before. I believe that the students would slowly correct the way they wash
