The late 1700’s and early 1800’s were a very pressing time in history regarding slavery and tobacco production. There were numerous altering opinions on these topics, and some were voiced better than others. The people that were more concerned with these issues wrote articles about them. The first article was written in 1775 when a traveller wrote about the effects tobacco production on the land in Virginia and Maryland. About twelve years after that, Thomas Jefferson wrote his article on his thoughts of slavery and how he believed that blacks were naturally inferior to whites. Contradictory to Jefferson, there were also articles written by slaves that had taught themselves to write. Frederick Douglas and Olaudah Equiano were both slaves during this time. Ave.”. “Hold it Down” by Gina Meyers describes a long narrative of the problem, a lack of control, impossibilities and frustration in everyday life, while “Accident, Mass. Ave.” presents a narrative of a problem, a moment of loss of control, aggression and frustration in a single moment that happen on a specific day. Similarly the poems are long and include long enjambed lines disturbed by few short and small lines. Contrasting the poems are ordered and structured very differently.

The film we watched was a Frontline documentary about the tragic case of Ralph Tortorici called A Case of Insanity. On December 14, 1994 Ralph went into a lecture hall with a rifle and a hunting knife taking the whole classroom hostage. He demanded to speak to President Clinton, and threatened to kill the hostages if they did not comply with his demands. Ralph was calm towards the students held hostage and demanded people from outside to gather food for them. 19-year-old Jason McEnaney attempted to wrestle the rifle out of Ralph’s hands, but this caused the to go off and he was shot in the genital area. Several students attacked Ralph and held him until the police came in and arrested him. Ralph was taken to jail with 14 counts of aggravated assault. His trial was held on Jan 3rd, 1996 and Ralph announced that he would not be present at his trial. It was stated that he had paranoia schizophrenia and he had also traces of cocaine in his system. Even though Ralph’s prosecutors indicated to the 12 jurors that Ralph was delusional, he suffered from mental illness.

In order to meet his father’s standards from that point on, Roosevelt focused on physical fitness and learned to love intense activity (“Roosevelt, Theodore”). As part of his education, Roosevelt was tutored privately and did not attend neither private nor public school; however, Arthur Hamilton Cutler, one of Roosevelt’s tutors, helped him enact his goal of going to Harvard through onerous studying and hard work (Morris 74).
