Also known as the Golden Age, the Han Dynasty was one of China's longest-lasting dynasties, surviving for over four centuries. It was a large part of Ancient China, a monumental period where Confusionist idea were incorporated for the first time, where the expansion of the Han empire was incomparable, and provided a precious time for advances in agriculture, science, industry, and medicine. It is considered to be a golden age in Chinese history specifically because of its achievements in arts, politics, and technology. This significant writing of the history of ancient China and the world was completed around 109 BC; it is a recollection of all human history as the Chinese knows it, from the prehistoric to the present Han Dynasty. Of course, he wasn’t exactly the first historian; the Chinese were already well aware of the art and science of history, but Sima Qian was the first person on our record who approached history in such a careful and analytical way. Still, and surprisingly, his position in the imperial court at the time he began writing wasn’t a historian, it was an inheritance from his father, a Court Astrologer. Though that was his official position, he is still considered the father of Chinese historiography for his monumental work, and is referred to by later generations as the Grand Historian. “After his travels, Sima was chosen to be a Palace Attendant in the government, whose duties were to inspect different parts of the country with Emperor Wu.” After traveling extensively in his youth, Sima Qian entered court service. In 110 BC, at the age of thirty-five, he was a member of the Wudi emperor’s entourage. In the same year his father died, and after the appropriate period of mourning, he was appointed in 108 to succeed his father in the post of the Grand
