Active students need the option to be exempt from gym, however, their should be an alternative in order to make educators, parents, and students happy. Students who are a part of sports, show choir, and marching band, should be eligible for a gym waiver, especially during the season of their activity. This would mean the students would not have to take gym class, however, simply by being in an activity does not mean students are knowledgeable about healthy lifestyles and exercises. Therefore, students who decide to get a gym waiver should be required to take a seminar class one day a week. This seminar would have multiple different units which would focus on a variety of aspects relating to physical exercise. It would include topics such …show more content…
These activities provide students with adequate physical fitness especially during the season of their activity. Therefore, adding forty-five minutes to an hour and a half of extra physical exercise is not necessary because those students are already physically fit. Active students usually have hours of practices and rehearsals everyday, taking away time they could use to work on homework, or use as relax time. If students are forced to do even more physical exercise during the school day, it tires them further and simply exhausts them. According to Arthur Allen of Webmd, thirty minutes of exercise a day is enough to prevent diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. If a student is in cross country and runs miles a day, on top of gym class, it could endanger their …show more content…
It is a fact of life that not everyone is born with good athletic skills. The students who do not perform well in gym class feel like outsiders, and spend the entire gym class fearing having to participate in front of people and embarrassing themself. In many schools, students are bullied in gym class due to lack of athletic ability. Linn-Mar students who feel uncomfortable in gym should be allowed the option opt out of gym class. They also would be able to attend the seminar class and learn about physical fitness, therefore on their own time, can adequately perform exercises to remain physically fit in a space where they feel completely comfortable. IF the student would like to request a gym waiver, due to fear of bullying and being uncomfortable in gym class, an additional meeting with their counselor would have to be scheduled to go over why they feel such a way. The meeting with the counselor would be to ensure that students are not simply taking advantage of gym waivers and would have to have a valid argument. By doing this, students overall would feel more comfortable at school due to the fact that they are not being forced into a situation which makes them completely
The Johnson County school board may be very resistant to the idea of allowing public access for the use of facilities to improve physical activity in the community due to liability concerns. These liability concerns are issues of additional cost, such as having to acquire additional health insurance to cover uninsured persons and for maintenance or damages that could occur to the school faciliti...
This paper examines the issues associated to the disengagement of students in the health and physical education domain. Typically traditional curriculums have shown to foster anxiety and create undesirable competition amongst students through fitness testing. It is critical to understand the reasons behind the issues of why students are disengaging in the participation of physical education, as the sedentary behavior is becoming a major factor in the obesity epidemic.
I had P.E. first term of my junior year in high school, and I thought it was a waste of class time. However, I looked at my grades for first term compared to my grades during my other terms when I did not have a gym class. My grades and scores during my first term were better than my grades and scores of the other terms. I had not realized that I performed better in the classroom when I was able to be physically active during the day. Not only did I perform better, but observations have been made suggested that other students experience higher grades as well when having a gym class or participating in other physical activity during the day. Gym classes are beneficial to students and help them not only physically, but academically as well.
Schools serve as an amazing venue to provide students with everyday physical movement, and to instruct the essentialness of general physical action for wellbeing. Shockingly, most individuals' get little to no general physical activity while in school. Budgetary obligations and the pressure to increase test scores have brought on school authorities to address the worth of PE and other physical activity programs. This has prompted a significant lessening in the time accessible for PE, and in a few cases, school-based physical action projects have been totally eliminated.
Covering all, we should revise the rules of Fort Bend ISD and change it. Having a sport in a school is a privilegeto one because some don’t due to the lack of money. It’s important for many students: it can help students in future possibilities such as athletics and their character. Knowing sports can change a person physically and mentally by making them smart, respectful, and healthier. Being in an after school activity is rewarding experience to all the students who are going to dedicated and focused on school and in the activity. Finally, student will be rewarded after school after the hard work throughout the day. Sports can influence students in many ways like character, making better graders, and lack of obesity. Fort Bend ISD should allow sixth graders to participate in physical activates: sixth graders would be satisfied.
A group of people decided to have the Legislature System look at the bill that would allow the same thing I addressed earlier. Diaz from an article said, “Athletics is the most important drop-out prevention tool we have in our tool kit” (Sweeney 2). At my school kids that play sports must not be failing two classes or they can’t participated in athletics that week. If a child is doing well in school they are less likely to drop out of school. An online article stated, “High school dropouts commit about 75 percent of crimes in the U.S” (Krache). Just by granting kids the ability to participate in a sport could persuade them into staying in school. This would lower the chance of them committing a
Moreover, this study reflected recommendations to improve the health of the student-athletes. In addition, the limitations that this study displayed over the athletic training services were mostly related with the lack of staff, and the medical budget offered by the high school. Even that not having athletic trainers represent a liability issue for the school and the school district; based on the data obtained, the study stated that some schools just provided “expenditures levels as low as 10 dollars per athlete” (Valovich McLeod, et al.,
Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. There are strict rules for student athletes, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. In physical education
Schools are starting to offer a class called “lifetime fitness”. Instead of playing sports such as basketball, football, and soccer this class teaches students physical activity the could use as they get older to stay fit. Some of the activities they teach are step aerobics, elliptical machines, free weights, and balance balls. They also learn how to make a individual exercise plans
Physical education is something that every individual needs in order to be healthy. Obesity has become a major conflict in the world today and teaching children how to be healthy could prevent them from such a future. Most households get dinner from fast food places. This kind of food without a proper amount of exercise leads to a lot of problems. An improper diet also leads to heart and other health problems that might not appear until an older age. Another big problem that an increase of gym classes could help improve is children learning social skills. Getting kids into sports can help them learn the importance of socializing. Colleges and work places search for students who have positive social skills. Knowing how to socialize with other people is what people need to have a healthy lifestyle. These factors are very important conflicts that need to ...
High school students should take a fitness test per semester because it can help improve the physical health, improve emotional health and it’s the school responsibility for the student’s health. Although, all students are not required to take the fitness test in their P.E. class. The school believes that students have the option to take it the fitness test, making it not a requirement. Students do have a right to not take the test or it can be the parent’s option for the student to not take the test. School administrators are not aware of the negative effects of the student’s health.
Gym class is either a class that students love or hate. For younger ones, it is usually their favorite class because they get to play games and hang out with their friends. As the kids get older, the amount of happiness about exercising in school typically decreases. Despite the fact that most high schoolers do not like their physical education class, it is necessary to have all throughout their schooling. Young children and teenagers need to learn from an early age about how to take care of their bodies, which includes their diet and exercise.
Students that remain obese and not as active as their other peers, may become bullied when they are not capable of doing some of the physical education activities. For example, many students in mandatory physical education classes spend most of their time sitting on the sidelines while the athletes play with the activity. However, sometimes this may lead to some students feeling excluded. Even though most schools require physical education classes, usually, the fitness goals are not being met for most of the students. Students should not remain forced to take classes that embarrass
Opposition of mandatory Physical Education in high schools believe that if a student has not developed a desire for voluntary physical exercise by the time he or she reaches high school , he or she may not ever (Eberhardt). It is true that individuals should not be forced into something they don’t want to participate in, but if these students don’t get any exercise outside of school, where will they receive an appropriate amount of fitness? Paul Eberhardt, athletic director, intramural director and head coach of the McNair Marlins basketball team in Richmond, B.C., believes “that students don’t care about participating in P.E. anymore and we have to educate students on the benefits of Physical Education”. In the 1994-1995 school year there were 1,133 students enrolled at McNair High School but there were only four P.E. classes available, which meant approximately 120 students attended in these classes. The remaining 1013 grade eleven and twelve students had no Physical Education at all. This is an astonishing figure. “Many students participate in sports and recreation activities outside of school, but most of them get hardly any exercise at all.
Physical education provides: 1) a variation of motor skills aimed to enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional development, 2) an understanding to improve and maintain their physical well-being and 3) opportunities to develop social and cooperative skills while gaining a multi-cultural perspective. Physical education provides a variety of motor skills aimed at enhancing the physical, mental, social and emotional development. The obesity statistics of 2009 quantified that childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since 1980 and in addition to concerns regarding chronic diseases, overweight and obesity incidences have even led to poorer levels of academic achievement (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). Additionally, in order to teach students the importance of preventing these ailments, those who oppose the amount of time spent in physical education or want to cut it out altogether should reconsider. Instead, time in physical education should be as equal as core subjects are seen.
