The United States of America is an amazing country that has many amazing things in it. Citizens can experience all kinds of freedom and they can obtain many amazing opportunities to better their lives. They have opportunities that many other countries don’t. Another solution that we can use to help stop the problem of gun control is maybe allowing students to carry guns on campuses and letting them defend themselves if needed. Although there is many speculations and arguments on this topic this could be a solution that America could try to help defend ourselves in case we were in the presence of a situation involving a mass shooter. A pro for this argument is advocates for allowing concealed guns to be carried on campus claim armed students and staff will deter any acts of aggression toward the school. The thought is similar to the Founders reasoning for including the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights – a well-armed militia can defend against first attacks. Lawmakers say students fear for their lives and want a way to defend themselves. Some students even personally said that they will feel much safer if they were allowed to carry a non-concealed weapon or a concealed weapon to defend himself if necessary. As the generations of America’s youth continue to grow, so does the increase in violent crimes associated with each generation. Over the last decade, studies have shown that school shootings have increased by an astonishing 13%. Although this figure as a percentage does not seem like much, it makes one stop and think. Parents blame the video games and their violent behaviors for the influence on their children’s daily lives. Grandparents blame the child’s parents for not showing them the right way to grow up in the world. And then we have that child’s friends who say that this child just was not respected by their classmates, or perhaps even bullied into this violent nature. Regardless of the cause to this violent increase, many Americans do believe in a solution: gun control. Gun control is the situation in which the federal government would put a ban on owning firearms. Contrary to what many “hard-core” Americans believe, gun control would not necessarily ban them from owning hunting rifles or even personal handguns. It would simply limit the ownership of semi-automatic assault rifles, and other rifles of this nature. This does not contradict the Second Amendment of the Constitution which states that American citizens have the Right to Bear Arms. I believe in the constitutional Right to Bear Arms, and I am against any attempt to eradicate that right for any American citizen: however, I am for gun control in the sense of lowering the possession of semi-automatic and fully-automatic rifles.
People who disagree with me think that there should be concealed gun carry on college campuses because it will make the students safer in a risky situation by making the students able to shoot down and stop the shooter. Students for Concealed Carry, an organization for concealed gun carry on campus, say, “The crux of the SGFS essay is the undeniable fact that college campuses typically have lower crime rates than the cities in which they reside” (642). In “Why Our Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Handguns”, an article against concealed handgun carry, states that, “Our colleges and universities are safe sanctuaries for learning.” (633).
Secondly, some people believe guns should not be allowed on campus because they may go off by accident. True, a gun may go off by accident, but according to, Students for Concealed Carry, out of 150 college campuses that allow concealed carry, there have been only three accidental discharges (Common). Two of them were by staff and one by a student. All three of the accidental discharges resulted in non-life-threatening discharges in which no one was injured (Common). Guns should be banned from all college campuses nationwide. Many students, teachers, and college presidents strongly oppose hidden, loaded guns on campuses because it will lead to increased violence, accidental shootings, and the non-carrying public would feel unsafe around the carrying public. If all elementary to high schools have a strict ban on guns for their campuses, it seems logical to extend the ban up to higher education. Let's talk gun rights, and what gun rights are doing to our economy today. What are gun rights you ask? Well as american citizens as it says in the second amendment of the constitution,we the people have the right to keep and bear arms/guns.I believe that we should be able to keep our guns and be able to protect ourselves from the people that can cause all the shootings. If they get rid of our guns than we won't be able to protect ourselves from the bad people that will get guns for ex: from of the black market.
Even when people call the police, it takes time for the police to come and shooting does not take that much time to kill people. To solve this problem, I think the campus safety should carry guns. Also, teachers may have a right to have guns, too. When the shooter comes into the classroom, the teachers are the only adults that can protect the students. To protect children, they all have to be trained how to use the gun.
