Guido d’Arezzo, originally Guido Aretinus, was an Italian monk born in France around the year 991 AD, although the exact year is often debated. He eventually “became a monk of the order of St. Benedict in the monastery of Maur des Fosses, which is located near Paris”
(Musical). While he was there he realized that the other monks were unable to adequately transcribe music into manuscripts in a way that was easy to understand. He came up with a method of indicating exactly what note the conductor wanted the choir to sing called the
