First Selection: La cathedrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) from Preludes, Book 1-Claude Debussy (1862-1918) First Hearing: Quiet, Sad Second Hearing: The composer created this stunning song for his book one of the Preludes. He claims the Cathedral to be a lost city where punishment was held for wrongdoing long time ago. The song puts me in a sad mood because knowing what the song is about is sad. Third Hearing: There are a lot of low pitches with a few high pitches. It has a wide range of pitches. The melodies are conjunct until at the end of the song where it descends. It brings out the song clearly. The genre is a programmatic piano prelude. There is a two-part form that shows where the Cathedral rises and sinks. The musical style reflects a story about the Cathedral. Second Selection: The Banshee- Henry Cowell (1897-1965) First Hearing: Creepy, Dark, Scratchy Second Hearing: The composer loves music from other cultures that he uses Chinese string-playing techniques. The sound of the music creeps me out in a way, but I also think it is awesome. Third Hearing: There are a lot of high and low pitches throughout the song. The tone color is dark that is sharp. The dynamic levels are both crescendo and diminuendo. The composer causes a three- note plucked motive while he use his hands to pluck the strings on the piano. He did not only pluck the strings but also scrap and strum the strings. There really is not much of a harmony in this awesome piece of music. The genre is experimental piano music. In my opinion, Cowell did an excellent job in creating this piece because it had to take a lot of talent and practice to get it to sound right. The tempo is a repeat of slow-fast-slow-fast.
