Greening is the process of transforming various things such as a space, a lifestyle or a brand image into a more environmentally friendly version (such as greening your work place or greening your school). The act of greening involves incorporating organic or green products and processes into one's environment.
Green economy, green technologies, green TVET, green jobs have an important effect on a variety of social and ecological processes. In recent times sustainable development has been discussed as a concept for a future development in many different ways, and more people have come to recognize that we need to ensure that future generations are left no worse off than the current generation. This needs to find recognition in TVET (technical and vocational education and training) programs. In the field of vocational education it means that TVET for sustainable development has to contribute to developing, strengthening and disseminating ways of sustainable thinking and acting. Workers should be able to use their knowledge and their qualifications to identify the social, economic and ecological challenges facing modern societies and to develop ideas and strategies. Thus, it is important that TVET does not only impart technical and specialized knowledge but also develops conceptual and systemic thinking and acting. In addition TVET stakeholders need to assess which new fields of work the new technologies and the new green economy deliver, and on this basis they need to develop new green job ideas which include the concept of sustainable development. Greening is used as a process of pursuing knowledge and practices with the aim to be more environmentally friendly and enhance decision making and lifestyle in a more ecologically responsible manner, this can lead to environmental protection and sustainability of the natural resources for current and future generations. If adapted to educational and training activities of an institution, it could lead to a systematic process of change. The greening of TVET institution process invites persons to engage in approaches that seek to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that can lead to more sustainable practices in the community, the workplace and other settings where knowledge and skills could be applied. It can also lead to obtaining professional qualifications that reflect environmentally friendly skills to perform tasks.
In the context of implementing UNESCO’s Global Action Program on ESD (Education for Sustainable Development), UNESCO-UNEVOC promotes the implementation of Greening TVET.
