You may have heard breathtaking tales of Greek gods and goddesses fighting off thousands of crazy beasts and monsters, but have you ever wanted to know how they started? There are many interesting things to learn about the people, creatures, origins, tales, and cultures of the Greeks, and even some fun and wild facts to learn along the way. Even today, Greek tales have been told and retold for longer than anyone can remember. The earliest known versions of these myths appear in written form by two Greek poets, Homer and Hesiod, which date back to almost 2,700 years! Instead, the Greeks started traditions of storytelling to explain the actions of the gods. Since then, for hundreds of millions of years, the Greeks have passed down their tales of bravery, hatred, betrayal, and love to young ones, and is even still a practiced religion.
The creation of the world started with chaos and nothing to calm it. It was only a void of black. Then, Erebus was created. This was a feared place of death, and nights filled with darkness. Nothing existed except hatred, sadness, and loneliness. Then, love was born, bringing a light that had never before been seen. From these little hopes for the world, Gaea, the earth, emerged. Gaea became the goddess and ancestral mother of life and earth. From there, gods and goddesses gave birth to more gods and goddesses, and this world became abundant with inhabitants. These stories and gods were very important to the Greeks, for they were believed to make the lives of the Greeks better, and protect and watch over the Greeks when they died. The gods and goddesses were believed to be heroes and made the Greeks feel safe from harm. Greeks believe that their gods are nothing without a great story to tell, and most Greek tales include a god fighting off or even befriend a wild or crazy monster, like cerberus, cyclops, or giants. And of course there are the the beautiful and kind creatures who help in their journeys, such as pegai, or the phoenix. The mythical creatures are often a very important aspect of the stories, and are very crazy and interesting creatures.
The main gods and goddesses are considered to be the Olympians, a very important part of the culture itself. The Olympians include Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes, and either Hestia or Dionysus. These gods some of the most famous and powerful gods due to their residency atop Mt. Olympus. They earned their spot by winning a ten year battle of gods, him and his siblings defeating the former ruling gods, the Titans.
If it weren't for love, which came after the birth of Erebus, there could have been no more gods. Gods that had come from the previously existing void fell in love, and their children were born gods. After years and years of this, the mythical creatures came, and the world was full of
