Through the course of researching Greek culture I learned a lot about my own culture and the significance that culture has in the world. Although I come from an Irish culture and not the Greek culture that was used in my group’s presentation, there was still a lot that I learned by completing this project. Primarily, I saw the effect that culture has on people’s lives. When researching Greek food I truly saw how different people eat. In my household every meal is accompanied by some sort of potato product. Although stereotypical, at every dinner my father makes a potato dish for the family. Before this project, I never thought about the significance of this or that this was different than other households in the United States and around the
Greek life in most people’s eyes is considered to be joining a sisterhood or brotherhood such as a sorority or a fraternity. Greek life is an extremely large part in numerous universities. More than half of the students are actually members of a Greek organization. Some may say that Greek life is not for them, but they truly do not know all of the advantages that come from being a member of a Greek organization. Do they realize how several of our nation’s leaders were members of Greek life probably not, since most of them were? One should join Greek life, not only for abundant friendships gained, but because of advantages, for example leadership skills and along with the countless networking
The Greek Americans have a history of existence dating back to the 6000 BC. The period between 1880 to 1910 had a lot of significant effect on the art elements in the American history; the elements and artifacts used during this period have extensive descriptions of the culture and general way of lives of these countrymen on the American continent. The various stereotypes and social order of communities differ from one geographical region to another including the native languages, perception of different elements in social activities. What is culture? Culture is such a complex concept that it is not defined by one simple thing. When studying the culture of a particular group of people we look at their beliefs, fashion, art, music and even food. By simply trying food from a particular culture we can learn much about its history and even geography. Recently I had the opportunity to try authentic Peruvian cuisine. Not only did I get to try new food and get to learn about a new culture, I also got to be able to compare it to my own Colombian culture.
Apollo, the Greek god of the Sun, was a very powerful figure in ancient Greek culture. Two different myths dealing with Apollo bring about explanations of how Apollo originated and the other depicts the bravery of him at such a young age. Along with the myths and stories of this great Greek god, there are also multiple works of art that depict the way he was viewed by the people of that time. Three pieces that could be found that were dated correctly are as follows, K5.12 APOLLON & PYTHON; a Bronze statuette of Apollo; and a Lekythos, oil flask, of Apollo Attributed to the Nikon Painter. All three of these pieces share common characteristics that follow the myths and legends but on the flip side they also bare a few differences.

In the early Middle Ages, Europe begins to make strides towards a new culture, one that was completely different from anything that had come before. By the beginning of the Middle Ages, the Western side of the Roman Empire was politically finished. Rome had previously been a largely influential political entity. Even though Rome no longer existed politically, its culture continued on, showing the culture of a society is more durable than the society itself.

There are countless cultures around the world. Moreover, no any culture is the same; culture is diverse. Throughout the entire course, I learn more about different cultures such as: Egypt (chapter1), Mesopotamian (chapter1), Greece (chapter 2), Rome (chapter4)... Each culture has its own customs, arts, ideas and beliefs. Also, we can easily see the diversity of culture in a classroom as students come from different countries, have their own mother language and religion. Culture is shared, transmitted and pass on from generation to generation. The course enhances my knowledge about prehistoric cultures as well as the integration and how culture has changed and grew over period of time. Culture is a concept that classifies shared values, beliefs, traditions, and principles among members of a specific group. It is important to understand one’s own culture as well as other cultures in order to become culturally aware. A way to become more culturally aware is to research one’s own cultural background. Through researching my origins, identifying my past encounters with other’s beliefs, biases, and behaviors, and placing myself into the shoes of another culture, I am more aware of the influence my culture and other cultures have had on me.
The food of ones culture is one way of showing who you identify with. In Massimo’s book Food Is Culture he says,“Food takes shape as a decisive element of human identity and is one of the most effective means of expressing and communicating that identity.” (Montanari xii) The food of their birth culture shows what their blood family and people who look like them eat. 1. What is Culture? What I personally think is that our culture is the foundation of who we really are in life. It identifies the lifestyle and pursuits that are practiced in the group of people we relate with in our society. In other words, an important concept to understand is that cultural beliefs, values, and practices are learned from birth first at home, in church, and other places where people meet. Some practices and beliefs in human culture include religion, music, sports, food, health beliefs, and art which represent the values we have in life. Also, our own culture is diverse and it is significant to look with in and identify what we value the most, what is essentially needed, and how we see the world. It is our remaining tool and we don’t even realize it is needed to communicate and socialize with others.
From 750 BCE to 30 BCE, the Greek civilization was founded, developed and sustained. The significance of this time period would go on to affect history by having an impact on how nations would later be created and operated and how we as citizens think and act in our society. Some of the first and great philosophers, scientists, artists and politicians arose from this era. One of these forever memorable players and catalyst for change in this extraordinary time was Alexander the Great. His actions, specifically political and war-focused, would solidify Greece 's place on the world stage and expand its influence and reach.
