The Pearl Essay

Greed is the motive to all evil. Greed is the main lesson learned in The Pearl. In the book, many of the people could’ve cared less for Kino and his family until they found out that he found a pearl, which he later named “The Pearl of the World”. When Kino first found the pearl, the only thing he could see on the surface of it was every dream and wish that he hoped would come true, but little did he know that him and his family would end up suffering greatly behind his greed. The infant son of Kino and Juana, Coyotito, was bit by a scorpion. After Coyotito was bit by the scorpion, the parents knew that they should go get him treated, but they didn’t have the money to do so. She really wanted to get rid of the pearl because she knows that greed will destroy them, but Kino’s greed would hold on tight to the pearl. He refused to rid the pearl. He decided that he wanted to sell it instead. He was being greedy for more money from the pearl. The day came for Kino, Juana, and Coyotito to go to town and sell the pearl. Kino went to the dealer to only find out that the pearl has no true value, and it drove him crazy because as stated by Steinbeck (1992), “ But kino had grown tight and hard. He felt the creeping of fate, the circling of wolves, the hover of vultures. He felt the evil coagulating about him, and he was helpless to protect himself. He heard in his ears the evil music” (p. 51-52). Kino’s greed was beginning to overtake him. Another example of greed is when Kino caught Juana trying to get rid of the pearl. She knew that the pearl was evil and that it was going to destroy them, but Kino didn’t care. As he caught Juana trying to get rid of the pearl, he punched her in the face.
