The well known phrases ¨grease is the word¨, and ¨what team? Wildcats¨ emerged decades apart, yet from almost the same movie. With a twenty eight year age gap between the movies Grease and High School Musical, the differences are impossible to avoid, examples being the way the characters handled their problems. Their respective time periods influence the leading characters, (also called protagonists), Sandra Dee and Danny Zuko in Grease and Gabriella Montez and Troy Bolton in High School Musical, each in the way society views women. Set in the 1950’s, a period often viewed as one of conformity, Grease's, Sandra and Danny portrait traditional gender roles; she desperately craved his approval. Randal Kleiser's Grease displayed his love interests meeting and falling in love during the summer. They both believed they would go separate ways at the end of the summer, therefore making the most of their short time together. When Danny told Sandy ¨this is only the beginning¨ ( Kleiser, Randal n.pag.), it foreshadows to the viewer that this is not the end of the road for these two. This proved to be true when Sandy's parents change their plans and decide to permanently relocate from Australia, to Venice California. In a twist of fate, she will now attend Rydell High, the same school that her summer flame Danny Zuko attends. Fate decided the course; destiny chose for Sandy and Danny to be together. Twenty eight years later, a similar chain of events takes place in Kenny Ortega’s teenage love story: High School Musical. Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez crossed paths at a Colorado ski lodge where they randomly called upon to sing karaoke together at a New Year's party. The chemistry between them, (shown to the left) makes it clear to the viewer that there is something truly special between them. The song title “Start of Something New” (Ortega, Kenny n.pag.) is again foreshadowing or hinting to the audience that this again was not the end for the teenagers. As in Grease, Gabriella’s mother, changed the plans and chose to move the family across the country to Albuquerque, New Mexico, home of the East High Wildcats, and Troy Bolton. Fate, once again, brings the main characters together. In both movies, the protagonists are in the same physical location but must overcome the stereotypes of the time and the peer pressure of high school if they are going to be together as a couple. These were not random events that occurred for these love struck teenagers.
