Literature is crucial and significantly important in everyday life; it helps people build vocabulary and develop comprehensive reading and writing skills. Literature consists of a variety of written works or books such as comic books and graphic novels. Comic books are a strip of comics that are produced periodically and are mostly about superheroes like superman, batman, and spiderman. Graphic novels are similar to comic books, but can be nonfictional, fictional, or an autobiography; these books relate more to real-life situations. Graphic novels convey strong language by containing a variety of word choice. Strong and difficult words incorporated in a reading material will help expand the reader 's own vocabulary. This will also help the reader in his or her testing ability. Most standardized tests contain sections which tests student’s vocabulary in context skills. Comic books are usually written for a younger audience and should not be read by teenagrers who are preparing to take the scholastic aptitude test (SAT), American college test (ACT), or other standardized tests. Reading comic books will not be challenging enough for teenagers, and it will not help them learn any new or difficult vocabulary words. In the article, More than comic books, it states that “...middle school and high schools students should be able to do more than memorize dates and names of famous people; they should be able to contextualize, corroborate, and source different historical events and documents. On October 10th, 2017 at Springhurst Elementary School, I conducted a “Reading Interest Survey” and the “Elementary Reading Attitude Survey.” These surveys were conducted on a 1st grade student, Jax, to determine what his feelings are towards reading in different settings, what genres he prefers to read, and interests. It was found that Jax doesn’t mind reading, but prefers a few different topics. This was evident through his raw score of 30 on recreational reading, and a raw score of 31 on academic reading.
In the essay, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” Sherman Alexie discusses about how a Superman comic book was the reason he learned to read. He believes that anyone can gain education and achieve their goals if they are willing to put effort, even if the world wants to see you fail. A graphic novel is a story that actually has something to say, it means something, and/or it is nonfictional. It is set up like a comic but has more detail. A graphic novel is different form cartoon comics because it does not have the cartoon look and feel to it. The Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS) / © PAWS survey designed by Dennis J. Kear from Wichita State University will be used in conducting this study. It provides a suggestion of student attitudes toward reading. The survey consists of twenty items and can be administered to the entire classroom in within ten minutes. Jim David, the creator of the Garfield cartoon character, and Paws Incorporated, the copyright owner, supplied camera-ready pictures of Garfield displaying a range of emotions from happy to very upset (Kear, 2000). Each item presents a brief statement about reading, followed by four pictures of Garfield. Each pose of Garfield is designed to depict an emotional state, ranging from very positive to very negative.
When writing any sort of narrative, be it novel or poem, fiction or non-fiction, scholarly or frivolous, an author must take into account the most effective manner in which to effectively convey the message to their audience. Choosing the wrong form, or method of speaking to the reader, could lead to a drastic misunderstanding of the meaning within an author’s content, or what precisely the author wants to say (Baldick 69). Even though there are quite a bit fewer words in a graphic novel than in the average novel, an author can convey just as much content and meaning through their images as they could through 60,000 words. In order to do that though, their usage of form must be thoughtfully considered and controlled. Marjane Satrapi, author of the graphic memoir The Complete Persepolis, took great pains in the creation of her panels in order to reinforce and emphasize her narrative, much like a novelist utilizes punctuation and paragraph breaks. Through her portrayal of darkness and lightness, Satrapi demonstrates that literary content influences, and is primary to, the form.
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
As novels used to be a frequent part of society that was common, but as literature changes, perspective changes as well. Comics are now seen as simplified versions of the “greater” works of literature fashioned to cater to our now more simplistic civilization. Thus, scholars suggests that comics should not be viewed as something that is a mature work of literature. However, the whole point of literature is taken away if we’re looking at solely the quality and not seeing if readers can truly understand the meaning of the literature. This is exactly what McCloud presented to his audience. Comics simply give an upright understanding of whatever it is trying to explain, without losing any sort of value. As McCloud proves this in his essay with such thorough and eye-opening examples. In example, on page 748, he shows us how unbalanced a text can be with only words. The classic comic book is a polar opposite of the complex nature of poetry. The comic book is designed for the younger reader and possesses a simplistic nature that allows the creator to use visual media combined with short written dialog to tell a story. The pictures in a comic book are an integral part of the makeup of a comic book. The pictures allow the creator to portray the protagonist and antagonist in a way that is common to all readers. This however inhibits the use of imagination by the reader. The pictures are all an artist's interpretations of the actions and settings that make up each scene. When a person reads descriptive text with no pictures, it allows the reader to build a mental picture of each scene that is unique to his/her own personality. The comic book does not allow for this expressiveness in its prefabricated structure.
Most people believe that graphic novels are just an art book with minimal text. They believe it is just for entertainment for kids or young adults. They think that graphic novels are just like comics. But to get to the point, graphic novels are just like all the other novels. They are a piece of literature that tells a story and pulls out the reader’s imagination, so that they feel that they are a part of the story or can even relate to the story. Graphic novels have changed and developed into such remarkable pieces of literature and should be accepted by all scholars to be placed in that category. According to John Ridley, “There are still some people out there who believe comic books are nothing more than, well, comic books. But the true cognoscenti know graphic novels are-at their best-an amazing blend of art, literature and the theater of the mind”.
Literature has many purposes, and opens doors to unique worlds. Through Literature, we discover ourselves and world time and again.
