As I further my education, my main goals for graduate school are to gain the knowledge and skill set for the field that I am most passion about, which is recreation and sports. Taking the next step towards a master's degree is the academic challenge I want to take on. I found my passion for recreation through volunteering for multiple events while serving active-duty Navy. I have volunteered many hours in a program called Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD), which helps to promote positive environments for sailors through social organizations, community involvement and recreation events. My Senior year in High School has officially begun, only one more year at Corona High. I know that Senior year is supposed to be fun, but I believe every year is an opportunity to improve. I have already set my goals for this school year. I believe I can achieve a GPA of 4.0 or above. However, there are some personal goals that I need to complete first. I need to stop my terrible habit of procrastinating. Another goal of mine is to pass my AP tests so I can earn college credit. I also want to learn new things, so I started to learn the basics of Coding, now I need to finish this course. These are some things I look to accomplish this year.
Marion Military Institute is considered to be one of the best schools for preparing cadets who hope to soon enter a Service Academy. The Institution exposes students to the military “way of life”, academically and physically. The particular way MMI prepares cadets is through its rigorous Service Academy Program (SAP), a personalized program by each service academy that is designed to maximize cadet’s competitiveness for earning a United States service academy appointment. The SAP program provides a challenging academic curriculum, which undoubtedly prepares cadets. However, there is one important aspect of preparation that the SAP program does not provide – active sports and clubs available to participate in. At MMI, only four sports are offered to cadets: baseball, basketball, tennis, and wrestling. There could be many more, but the school does not utilize its resources and equipment effectively. Rather, the resources sit in stagnation. The large indoor pool and the attractive stadium that features a usable football field, fresh track, and soccer goals all sit unoccupied, since there are no teams or clubs playing any of these sports. Instead, cadets are sitting in the barracks watching Netflix, listening to music, or sleeping. A year of inactivity in a sport will decrease the cadet’s athletic performance once they reach the service academy. Even Academics suffers. According to extensive research, schools with strong athletic programs have higher test scores and lower drop-out rates. For some people, doing simple tasks may seem impossible because of a mental or physical disability that restricts some seemingly simple functions. These people can seek help from a recreational therapist to help achieve personal goals that may seem unlikely for them to accomplish. As part of my senior project, I had to research a career that I’m interested in and what it takes to obtain that career. I chose to research recreational therapy, and I looked at multiple websites to see if this career is a good choice for me. I had never heard of it before and didn't know that it was a career, but as I researched more and more, I realized that it could be a great fit for me. I also looked up some colleges in Pennsylvania to see what school I should go to to receive a good education that will prepare me for starting my life as a recreational therapist. I even emailed a professor, who used to be a therapist herself, of recreational therapy at the college I am interested in and conducted an interview. I have faced many tasks where a leader had needed to step up and I am always willing to do so. I am also willing to get help when I need it. If I can’t complete a task by myself I do not mind asking a classmate, teammate, friend or a teacher for guidance. Being part of a sports team at the University means that automatically you are part of the community which fills the criteria for the LLO of citizenship, which is defined as, “being an engaged and knowledgeable member of society” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018). When I was on the rowing team we would use citizenship to get more supporters by becoming more involved in the community. We also used critical thinking to help us engage in the Charleston community in interesting and new ways. An example of an event we did that used both critical thinking and citizenship was during homecoming. We held a rowing contest and also offered rowing lesson to people who were interested in the sport. In sport you have to be ethical. Ethical practice is another LLO that I learned out of the classroom. The University defines ethical practice as, “the way you treat others with honesty, fairness, justice, integrity, and altruism” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018). I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.
Being a part of Appalachian State University’s Honors College would be an amazing privilege. According to the university, the Honors College has been providing superior education to intellectually-motivated students for more than thirty five years. Being a part of the Honors College would help me promptly reach the personal, intellectual, and professional goals I set for myself as well as optimize my college experience.

I believe that I have the ability to work up to Stanly Early College standards. Determination, dedication, and desire are all qualities that I have.
Along with all my extra-curricular activities, I still manage to find time to accomplish my homework and achieve a high grade point average. Currently, my GPA is a 97.889. I constantly work harder and harder to maintain my grades and continue to challenge myself every year by scheduling difficult classes. Even though travel soccer is all-year-round, I make it my priority to uphold my high grades. With many stresses over the overlap in soccer schedules and studying for school, I make a list of assignments and follow my schedule in order to have time to participate in both. As proof of my scholarly achievements, I have received Distinguished Varsity Scholar Awards for both my freshman and sophomore years. My goals in college are to get involved with student government, play lacrosse graduate in the top of my class all my life of being in school I was always active not just a regular student. Many reasons convinced me to pursue a graduate level degree in social work. First the standard of education has greatly increased in the field of social work, especially regarding social work in the healthcare field. The majority of jobs in healthcare require a graduate degree, especially in my town of Kamloops, British Columbia. I hope to do case management in healthcare and most of my colleagues stated I most likely wouldn’t be a candidate for this position if I do not have a graduate level education. Furthermore, I have invested my time in a career I hope to continue for the rest of my life and this being said I want to have options and flexibility of opportunities in the field of social work. Considering social services offers such a vast array of services, it’s in my best interest to allow myself the most exposure to opportunity and earning a graduate level degree will allow this to occur.
