The second focus in the University of Charleston’s mission statement is enlightened living (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). The University defines enlightened living is defined as “having a broad range of knowledge in such subjects as economy, politics, art, literature, history, values, moral purpose, and personal character (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). Being involved in the campus at UC helped me to learn about enlightened living. Even though LLOs are normally applied to class I feel that the UC incorporates them into everything they do. “To create an effective environment where students can learn to live enlightened lives they must be taught the rights and responsibilities associated with social, political and economic communities” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018). …show more content…

Being part of a sports team at the University means that automatically you are part of the community which fills the criteria for the LLO of citizenship, which is defined as, “being an engaged and knowledgeable member of society” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018). When I was on the rowing team we would use citizenship to get more supporters by becoming more involved in the community. We also used critical thinking to help us engage in the Charleston community in interesting and new ways. An example of an event we did that used both critical thinking and citizenship was during homecoming. We held a rowing contest and also offered rowing lesson to people who were interested in the sport. In sport you have to be ethical. Ethical practice is another LLO that I learned out of the classroom. The University defines ethical practice as, “the way you treat others with honesty, fairness, justice, integrity, and altruism” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018).
