Superficially, I am Erin Watt, a Graceland University mathematics student. Even though I received “satisfactory” grades in Calculus III and IV, the compassionate Graceland University faculty helped me recalibrate. From an early age I knew that I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics, but my instructors’ patience and wisdom inspired me to become a mathematics professor. In addition to providing a supportive environment for my future students, I wish to encourage them to seek a life of curiosity and learning. Since my decision to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics, I have accumulated academic experiences that will provide a stable foundation for my future. Since Graceland University and Lamoni depend on each other, students have numerous opportunities for positive community building. In fact, Dr. Jason Smith recruited several of his mathematics students to help with Mathemagical Mystery Tour; during the winter of 2016, we ventured to neighboring counties and brought fun mathematics activities to the middle schools. By working directly with the classes, the college students hoped to break the potential monotony of daily lessons and to encourage the middle schoolers to find the joy in math. Point Loma Nazarene University is a private, Christian Institute that offers high education while developing students on their spiritual journeys. People are inspired by the Institutions because they work hard to overcome obstacles placed in their way. Students, Alumni’s, and Parents see the motivation and determination of the schools to stay ongoing and I see it as well.

When conducting this interview, I have learned a lot about the different differentiation strategies that my host teacher uses in her classroom and how they are both similar yet different from tracking students in the classroom. This has informed me on what skills I want to possess in my future classroom and what I want to do to make my students the most successful they can be when learning mathematics.

As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
