Superficially, I am Erin Watt, a Graceland University mathematics student. Even though I received “satisfactory” grades in Calculus III and IV, the compassionate Graceland University faculty helped me recalibrate. From an early age I knew that I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics, but my instructors’ patience and wisdom inspired me to become a mathematics professor. In addition to providing a supportive environment for my future students, I wish to encourage them to seek a life of curiosity and learning. Since my decision to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics, I have accumulated academic experiences that will provide a stable foundation for my future. Since Graceland University and Lamoni depend on each other, students have numerous opportunities for positive community building. In fact, Dr. Jason Smith recruited several of his mathematics students to help with Mathemagical Mystery Tour; during the winter of 2016, we ventured to neighboring counties and brought fun mathematics activities to the middle schools. By working directly with the classes, the college students hoped to break the potential monotony of daily lessons and to encourage the middle schoolers to find the joy in math. The fact that the university provides adaptations, resources, and opportunities, along with celebrating student and alumni success, shows that the school values unique interests and backgrounds. Additionally, through collaboratory efforts (e.g. The Annual Conference of World Affairs and the University of Colorado Boulder Brain Behavior Clinic) the university strives to build a progressive and inclusive environment.
