Government Paid College in the U.S.

In the recent past, many of the United States Presidential Candidates and the President have suggested and implemented the idea of “free” college. The idea is that the United States Government would set a budget for college students to have the first two years of community college paid for. There are two very different opinions about the topic, mostly between the younger and older generations of the United States. First to consider are the advantages of having the U.S. Government pay for the first two years of college for college students. Government pay for the first two years of college. One of the many disadvantages, mentioned by the older generations, is the increase in taxes. Therefore, the idea of a United States tax payer paying for someone’s college education for the rest of their lives is distasteful and unfair to those that are already in their career path without the ability to take advantage of free college. Another problem with government paid college is the mentality of the younger generations. For example: much of the younger generation believe that they are owed something, mostly because of a lack of discipline. If those generations are given the opportunity to for government paid college, then there is a possibility they will expect promotions, grants, welfare, etc. without earning those benefits, not to mention the idea of those generations governing the United States in the future. Lastly, the U.S. Government already offers ways for them to pay for a college students tuition. For example: the Post 9/11 GI Bill is a way for the government to pay for a student’s tuition and give them housing allowance. The GI Bill is one of many benefits that can be obtained from the
