Most people think that GMOs or genetically modified organisms were created in test tubes, and in labs. But contrary to this belief GMOs have been in agriculture for the past 3 centuries, and not created in test tubes. GMOs are vital to the survival of human race and its ever dwindling food supply. Early forms GMOs have been around for the past 3 centuries and were first introduced through the means of selective breeding, and crossbreeding in different crops, such as corn. Over this period of time, even in its early stages, GMOs had exponentially increased crop yield for farmers. This had helped provide and benefit the early human race by providing a consistent food source that could be regrown time and time again. Also, GMOs can help solve …show more content…
An example of this would be creating bigger and stronger cows to either help harvest wheat and other crops, or be used as meat. In addition to this, crops that have pesticides genetically engineered into them can be entirely insect resistant. This will cause farmers to spend less money on pesticides while increasing profit and thus will boost the economy. Also, this will reduce the number of chemicals that will pollute the air and impact the world less. Some people might argue against these claims by saying that genetically modified plants and animals have not been tested enough,and therefore should not be retailed for human consumption and taken off of grocery shelves. But, this is an untrue statement because according to the company “Monsanto” they state that their research teams “conduct years of field trials and comprehensive testing to be scientifically certain the new trait and genetic modification has not changed the safety of the crop”. Another example that proves this claim wrong is that in the US about 46% of corn are GMO plants and 85% of soybean sugar beets and cotton raised in the US has pesticide resistance, longer survivability, and the ability to resist drought all genetically engineered into them and are labeled for retail use. These examples prove that using GMOs is safe and should be allowed for human consumption and allowed to be on grocery store

Because of the increase in population, products need to be manufactured in a faster and more efficient way, and with genetically modified foods, the food is larger in size and quicker to harvest. Another advantage of GM foods is that it uses less fertilizer and less water and is more resistant to insects, diseases, frost, and drought. Consumers would not want to eat food that has been treated with pesticides because of possible health hazards and growing GM foods can help eliminate the use of chemical pesticides. Plants that are genetically engineered to resist strong herbicide will help prevent environmental damage by reducing the amount of herbicides needed. The term GM foods or GMO (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques (Whitman, 2000). These plants have been modified in the laboratory to offer desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Also, genetic engineering techniques have been applied to create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and accurately. For example, this is done by the geneticist isolating the gene responsible for drought tolerance and inserts it into another plant. An English doctor, named Arpad Pusztai, did a study on rats being fed genetically modified foods. His study found out that rats that ate genetically modified potatoes had pre-cancerous cells, smaller brains, smaller livers, smaller testicles, and damaged immune systems. After finding this out, he then changed the eating habits of the rats by interchanging between feeding them organic potatoes and genetically modified potatoes for two weeks at a time. He concluded that whenever the rats ate the organic potatoes, their symptoms disappeared, but when the rats ate the GMO potatoes again, the symptoms reappeared.
