Virginia and Their Fight for Liberty against the Great Britain Empire In 1775 Patrick Henry gave his infamous speech stating how Virginia should no longer stand around and watch Great Britain tear them down into thousands of pieces. In front of the Congress Patrick declared a fight against the British parliament and their unjust imposed acts. In Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech, he uses repetition, diction, and allusions to spark a desire of freedom from Great Britain among colonist, to help the Americans, gain their rights over unfair taxation and acts. Patrick Henry in his speech says, “is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received”. The words ‘insidious smile’ just comes to show how the British are misleading and try to cover up everything with a smile. The words ‘insidious smile’ if broken down a smile is used to show politeness and creates a positive sense of mood and insidious means ‘a subtle way, but with harmful effects’ so the king wants to act nice by smiling but he has a fake smile on. In paragraph 3 of the speech he says, “War like preparations which cover our water and darken our land.” Henry does this explaining and elaborating on the hostile attitude Britain has towards the colonies, and showing the preparations being made for the outburst of a war. His use of diction in the sentence are the words “cover” and “darken” because they create an image of suffocation, death and imprisonment. He goes ahead and uses diction again in the sentence, “trust it not sir; it will prove a snare to your feet”, the words ‘snare to your feet’ create a feeling of entrapment as if there was no escape from the harsh reality where the British are no longer helping the
