Macbeth Essay on Gender Roles

In society, they have naturally assigned specific roles for men and women. In William

Shakespeare's play Macbeth, these gender roles play a very important part in the all the evil violence

that takes place throughout the play. Both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth show the role of ”manhood” just

to accomplish both the murders of King Duncan and Banquo. Therefore, in order for women to obtain

power, they must possess masculine qualities. Shakespeare proves this by including specific elements

in his play, which include:dialogue and word choice, the way he portrays the characters and the way he

introduces the climax with Lady Macbeth and Macbeth in the play.

At the beginning of the play Macbeth, King Duncan gave Macbeth with the title of 'Thanes of

Cawdor' because of his courageous fighting. Macbeth still continued to fight with evil ambitions that

were trapped inside of him. Macbeth then said, “Stars, hide your fires;/let not light see beyond my

black and deep desires” (1.4.52-53). When Macbeth contemplated murdering Duncan, Lady Macbeth

questioned Macbeth's 'manliness' by calling him a “coward” (1.7.43). It was a very rude move of her

behalf. Lady Macbeth assumed that the ordinary man is one who possessed certain masculine traits

which included; being aggressive, being violent, being ambitious and lacking expression of emotions.

Lady Macbeth then manipulated Macbeth by accusing him of not being a man. “I dare do all that may

become a man;/ who dares do more is none” (1.7.46-47). Later, Macbeth unfortunately committed the

murder of King Duncan just to prove to his wife that he is a “real man” and can do manly things. This

situation occurred once...

... people. This all lead back to Macbeth and the actions he made throughout the

play; whether they were good or bad actions.

In conclusion, gender roles in novels and plays really do have an effect on that specific type

of literature, whether you realize it or not. The importance of obtaining masculine qualities to Macbeth

and Lady Macbeth is evident in the play Macbeth. The only way for Lady Macbeth to gain the power

she desires is to obtain masculine qualities. Not all women want to do this, but she is willing to do

anything to obtain power. William Shakespeare proved this theory throughout the play with the use of

dialogue and word choice, how he chose to portray Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and through the climax

of the play by the end result of all the main events. To have power you need to obtain manly qualities to

show you are a strong individual.
